Thank you, Steve! I should have figured that one out myself. Of course it would be the same direction the distributor turns.
Here's the tool I made. I cut off the gear and turned the remainder down. I then skimmed the bore to clean it up and pressed in the piece of hex brass my work had.
The part I got was a used one from MWB and it was certainly not hard steel. The chips and how it cut was like cast iron. Maybe there were different versions over the years that were hardened.
