We've got them!! Pictures from Brazil of the much-talked-about "Dardo" car, which was built in Brazil, based upon the Italian X1/9.

Here now for your viewing pleasure (and mine!) are the pictures of a 1983 model Dardo, kindly submitted to this website by Euclydes Rocco, the Brazilian owner of this car (isn't the internet great!)

And now, without further ado, the pics:

</CENTER>By the way, sorry if I botched the dpi: my JPEG convertor just does the job & doesn't let me choose - but after all, we're lucky to be seeing this Dardo at all as hard as it is to find any info on them here in North America!

Again, a big "thank you" to Euclydes Rocco for sharing his Dardo with us here at the SeattleX1/9 website! :) Peace, -Mac.

Were older X1/9s stripped to get various trim pieces, top, air intakes, vents, maybe even whole dorrs with glass?

What's amazing too is that I had never heard of the Dardo before :)
I would love to check one out in the flesh (well, fiberglass).

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Brett...

Back in the '80s, the company in Brazil contracted with Fiat SpA to build the Dardo for the Brazilian market, as there were no X1/9s in that country AFAIK. The Dardo was built under license, and the Brazilian coachbuilders were given license to alter the design somewhat (either that, or it was a requirement of Fiat's - I'm not positive)...

At any rate, the Dardo was built! I am not certain wether it actually *uses* X1/9 parts, or wether the parts were allowed to be manufactured in Brazil under license from Fiat: for example, the targa tops - are they the Fiat part? -or did the Dardo makers simply create their own from the Fiat designs? I don't know for sure just yet, perhaps more will be revealed in time...

And just in case you missed the previous post in here about the Dardo and it's second evolution, the Montserrat (which is yet a takeoff of the Dardo itself), you can read that thread by clicking here as it is still in our archives. -Mac.

I was just re-reading the previously posted article on the Dardo and Montserrat cars when I noticed a strange bit of information that doesn't add up.

The color photos received of the Dardo came along with some brief information on the Dardo in general, one thing being the production of the car having run from 1982 to 1988.

But after reading the article again, the Dardo must have been produced even before 1982, because it says that it was 1980 when DiNizo set out to build the Dardo Montserrat...

Hey Euclydes, are you still lurking among us in the forum? We seek more info on these cars my friend - Most importantly, I would like to know what was the name of the company who built the Dardo? I know they were built by a company right there in Sao Paulo, but I don't know the company name. Any more info received gratefully - Peace, - Mac.

Whats a Padrao? I would E-mail him but I don't speak the language. Could it be another variant? By the way, I'm still looking for the red 74 "Cobra"(I named it that because of the Cobra sticklers on the targa bar) X1/9 last seen around Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio. It's got square Ferrari headlights, Unusual hood, built in metal spoilers and ground package. It's pretty cool, you would know it if you saw it.
P.S. I think the pics of the Dardo should be submitted to www.carpictures.com. Why not? <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You refer to the UKX survey entry found here? I have no idea what a Padrão is. If it were the name of the company who built the Dardo, that would make sense. Otherwise, I am stumped. I did notice, among other things, that the email address is Brazilian, and also noteworthy was the line on the form which reads, "gender: Macho" ;) Sounds funny to an American...

BTW, you are not the only person who has told me about the "Cobra X1/9" man, I keep hearing people's stories about having caught brief glimpses of this car, like it's a UFO or something! One guy told me it was an actual kit called a Cobra X1/9 (!) and that some US company was making the conversions or something like that. Metal buckets with recessed headlights, yeah I want to find some info on this!

Also fascinating - and yet to be displayed at this site - would be some decent pics of the DeTomaso Ghia, the car hurriedly put together by the 2 companies in an attempt to get it on a display stand at the auto show *before* Bertone and Fiat could unveil their X1/9! The DeTomaso Ghia bears an uncanny resemblance to an X1/9 with a small extra window in the targa bar, and more angular at the nose & tail. YEAH, this will be another shocking expose' one day :) -Mac.

So should we submit the Dardo pics to carpictures.com? Maybe we should just write our new friend "Rocco" and see if he minds beforehand. Besides, that would give a good excuse to email & deluge him with Dardo questions teehee! Just kidding, but actually if the guy enjoys his Dardo as much as we enjoy the X, he probably wouldn't mind! :) -Mac.
