1. Check the lamda sensor for a good contact, a corroded one can give bad readings to the FI system causing it to do weird things. This sensor is located on the exhaust manifold.

2. When your car is cold, the cold start valve is feeding the engine extra gas, when it warms up to hot, the valve shuts off. Could be that your injectors are slight clogged, anyone else have other ideas? Finally, check your filters. This should probably be first on your list of items to check.

3. Finally, check to make sure your cooling and oil system is up to snuff. If either of these is low, it could cause problem with heat and running of the car.

Firstly, even though "technically" some Xs here during the Fiat/Bertone market handoff days were called VS (the ones built after the '82-'83 Limited Edition, with the same exact parts but no numbered dash plate), almost no one ever called them that here at all or even knew the difference (was there a difference?!) Hearing someone refer to their X as a VS is almost always a dead giveaway that they are overseas, most likely in the UK.

Second giveaway: when was the last time in North America anyone heard of an '86 1500 with a carb (!) and points (?!!) - those poor Brits

Anyway, this also crushed the suggestion I was going to make for him, a leaking cold-start injector can cause the exact symptoms he describes, but obviously his car won't have one of those!

My only guess is a way-too-rich mixture? Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can help Jon out? -Mac.

Fuel under low pressure may be adequate for low speed driving, but as engine warms the low pump pressure allows vapor bubbles to form, blocking fuel flow...no start. May also be weak fuel return line check valve, causing same low circuit pressure to carburetor. And then again, maybe just needs points, plug, condensor and news plug wires. Bad plug wires often work fine on a cold engine. Resistance grows as heat builds.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

2. Sounds like things are getting awfully hot and percolating the gas in the carb... just what temperature are you leading up to when things start to go sour?

3. I think you'll need to correct the heating problem overall, next, by insuring good coolant flow, and a full (purged) radiator. Also TEST your reservoir cap and make sure it'll hold 13 pounds of pressure.

4. When the radiator fan does come on... at what temperature... and is it blowing from front to back?

Should come on at 195 and cool down to about 192 and cycle... meaning... maintain this temperature.

5. Adding a quart of Duralube to the oil and/or using Castrol Syntex oil have been SWORN to reduce engine operating temps by 17 degrees F. I've proven it to myself on three occasions.

6. Lastly, remove the thermostat and test under hot water in sink... and then pull radiator and take to a pro for a FLOW ANALYSIS. It possibly needs to be "cleaned and rodded".
