this is a bit of a repeat, with some new info.

summary:

replaced clutch in my '78 X this spring.

drove the car < 5k mi.

car was parked for "other problems" for >1 month.

car worked fine for a 3 trips of 70mi each.

beginning of 4th trip, noticed clutch judder
when taking off from a stop.

later in the trip, the clutch seemed to refuse to disengage. could not shift into gear.

last weekend, checked out the hydraulics, and they seem to be doing the job. can get at least 2 inches of travel from the slave cylinder.

also, the clutch release lever is practically bottomed out (against bell-housing), but still the clutch is not letting go.

steve mentioned that the nut that holds the
throw-out bearing forks on the shaft could have sheared.

however, this weekend, i operated the lever manually, with a steel pipe, and there is definitely resistance in the last 3/4 inch of travel.

so now i'm stumped.

maybe the clutch is sticking to the flywheel?
but why?

could i have put the friction disc in upside down?
and would this cause the problem?

i'm pretty sure i'll have to drop the tranny, soon, but i'd like to know what i'm looking for, and what parts i need to have ready.

it sure feels like the last two clutches i had to replace. but i can't imagine the clutch dying this quick.

The fact that the release levers travels at least as far as your other car, and nearly bottoms against the bellhousing sure makes it sound like the problem is with the clutch itself or the previously mentioned bolt that holds the TOB fork to the shaft.
Other possiblilites could be a defective disk (lining coming off) or a defective pressure plate (broken diaphram spring) or pressure plate bolts not tightend properly or even trans to block bolts not tightend (don't ask).... good luck!,

i've had this occur on my spiders.
one that sat for a while, and one after going thru a large puddle.

but what would cause that, here?
maybe some fluid leaking inside the bellhousing?

hoping it's as simple as the plate mounting bolts.

what would cause the pressure plate to go so rapidly? <5K / 6 months.

the clutch pedal engagement was always very close to the floor.

would relatively long-term maladjustment kill the pressure-plate?

i did check the tranny-to-engine bolts.

i seem to recall seeing the tranny inch out
on one hasty spider clutch job....

I assume that the clutch was new not rebuilt? I try to only use OEM Valeo clutches whenever possible. Have had some problems with other aftermarket new clutches. It sounds like you are going to have to pull the trans to see whats up...
