The transmission was partially disassembled and occupying a cardboard box full of itty-bitty goodies.
Tranny went back together as I fixed the previous shop's mistake. (Like that photo in the Haynes that says "Don't forget this interlock plunger"!) Since I was in there, the flywheel went off to PBS for a shave as well.
Clutch Master was the next problem. Stupid plastic fitting from the reservoir was broken. New M/C arrives, no chance of finding a replacement fitting. 15 minutes to remove the old M/C. An hour to weld an SAE fitting on. http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/message?forumid=12159&messageid=997378744 25 minutes to reinstall the M/C and splice back into the factory line. 3 frikin' hours to bleed the thing. It was a comedy that I can't even bring myself to reveal... At least not yet, maybe after a few months of therapy!
It fires up but wont stay running for more than 5 seconds. Long enough for me to determine that the clutch works (YAY!) and now the tranny proves itself to be fixed (YAY YAY!) and it moves under it's own power. Sixteen inches. Not bad since it's been mothballed for 5+ years. Nurse it along with a little carb cleaner in the intake to get it churning along happily. Once it warms up it's running fine although the exhaust is a little (cough hack gag) stinky. But ooooooh what a sound. Did I mention that it has a quad ansa ?
Oh this is too good. Idling along, happy italian idle music. Not overheating, battery doesn't appear to be charging but what the heck.
I slide her into first and pull forward gently. Headlights off (just after dusk) and no plates. No top either!! and creep to the end of the driveway. I remeber the feel of the X in an instant. It's been 2 years since I had my previous X out. First gear, wow the clutch feels light. Unfortunately the the accelerator pedal didn't age so well and is very heavy. Hey I'm moving forward, why not try that clutch again ? Second gear. Heh heh heh yeah that's the stuff. One more time! Third gear, got to love that pickup in 3rd. No idea how fast I'm going, speedo is not working and the tach shows 1500 RPM but my ear - and seat of my pants - said closer to 4k. Zing into 4th, and bang a quick left to get off the main drag. A quick U-turn-
what's that clickyclick coming from the rear right? I know I put the brakes together right. Ah nuts, I remember. I ran out of bolts when assembling the CV joint and that one only has two of the six present. Oh yeah, need to get a few of those in the morning. Headed back to the garage at a decent pace, and a beautiful exhaust note.
Just about 3/4 mile. My first X ride of the milenium. Simply incredible.
I wasn't sure why I didn't scrap this POS last year... Now I remeber!
