One side coming back together. Lots of rust mort and zinc primer. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon.

Now I'm getting a little beyond straight rust repair, but since I had to rebuild the rotten fender anyway, I thought I'd get a little creative and make something that will accommodate the 205/55R15's that I bought awhile back. Yes should've went smaller, but I've got the tires and will make it work.
I don't love the 'flat fender' look on modern rally cars, I will treat this as an inner fender and get some slope on the outer for aesthetics and some aerodynamics.
Last photo is of some fenders I really like, mine will not be as wide and I may not copy all the details. I like the 'running board' look, may give that a shot. Still not too sure how to tie in the front to the fender.

"I like where this is going..."

Since your car is basically a white canvas right now, have you considered box flares? I think the flat-and-angular X would look great with some group B style box flares.

I agree. I have considered making a fiberglass mold off my integrales boxy fenders. I guess I just want something a little different to what I have already.
Honestly this car is so rusty I am questioning wtf I am doing hahaha. I should just keep it simple (or let the thing rot to death) but I enjoy the creative projects and I'm learning.

Or just cut off most of the bodywork and make it a deathkart like the Miata guys do.

That would be pretty slick, but I understand why you want something different from what you have. Being a reformed Audi guy, I have long been influenced by Group B cars. When I see an X, I see a relative of the Stratos and the 037. I see some R5 or 6R4 style flares.

**Edit: my post was not intended to suggest that the Stratos was a Group B car. It came along long before Group B came into existence.

When you ride and race motorcycles for many decades, even a bodiless car is seen as a tank.

When I think of Xs with attitude I think more of a hill climb car.

Those badass hillclimb x's are things I would love to build one day. They really only resemble our cars in looks and layout, not so much in parts, hardly even need a car for a donor.

Not exactly pretty or good but pretty good enough for this, and better than the bondo over massive rust holes that someone else had done.
Thing about a small car is you work your way around the car fairly quick. I was working on a van before this project, doing a nicer job, but the sheer size of the thing really ate up time.

I'm no Tomas, but bit by bit I'm getting there and moving around the car.

Now that the engine is together, it's back into the rust. If I hadn't already built up an engine I would probably give up on this resto and sweep the car up into a pile and throw it in the bin.
