I don't know if it was actually a mystery to anyone else, but I didn't know it. Until now. There has been much speculation among some X owners regarding the origin of some "options" that certain Xs came with in the US market.

These items include: the chrome round single bars (nose guard, rear guard) that came attached between the little '74 quarter bumpers, a soft snap-on tonneau-top, an interior center armrest, the familiar little chrome rear trunklid luggage rack, and a chrome cross-drilled shifter.

It's been pretty-much clear that these items were not originating from Bertone or Fiat, thus the question of who? This stuff was being sold on the new cars at some dealers, as many older 1300s have that luggage rack (right, Ulix?)

MYSTERY SOLVED! -by accident! A friend came by today and dropped-off an old magazine for me, Car & Driver Aug. '74... I bought it for a writeup on the early US-spec X1/9, which was cool - but as I made my unknowing way to the end of the mag, lo & behold the inside back cover is a full-page color ad for "AMCO" of North Hollywood, California...

"AMCO puts its X on the Fiat X1/9" reads the bold print. So there you have it - they were selling to dealers *and* anyone who knew where the dealers were getting it :)

Interesting, as I just saw a beautiful light metallic blue X last week and, while getting the tour of the car noticed that it had tiny snaps attached all around the top of the windshield frame, and across the back of the targa bar. First time I ever saw that. Now on a fluke, here I am looking at this picture of it! If only I had a scanner... .. . --Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->About ten years ago I was purchasing some parts from a guy who owned a number of x1/9s. One of them was the oddest X I've ever seen. It had a metal rear trunk spoiler(looked like the ones Bayless sells), an odd engine cover(Ferrari like), metal ground-effect rocker panels, front hood didn't indent, and it had ferrari-like square headlights. The color was red and had "Cobra" stickers all over it. I recently tried to get a picture of it but he sold the car years ago and didn't have any that he knew of. I would really love to see one of these again.
Also when cruising the junkyards I've seen a number of x1/9s with a fixed position headlight. The stock unit was taken out and a square lamp with a metal surround was used in its place. I tried to get a set but they wanted way too much money. They later crushed them.
