If you were trying to increase your top speed, this would make a big difference, but even then, decreasing the wind resistance of a car by bolting on parts is not very effective I think. Increasing downforce this way is fairly easy, but often results in more wind resistance.

A simple curved lip around the roll-over bar would significantly reduce high-speed lift AND reduce wind-resistance by destroying the turbulent flow over the engine cover. Guiding it instead down to the tail-lid (just take a look at early MR-2s)

recessing the windscreen wipers and reprofiling the windscreen surround would aid in air flow over the car, while removing those stupid little gutters down the side of the windscreen pillars would do wonders for wind-noise AND help the air flow again.

Replacing the daft rubber strip over the front-bumper (on the euro model) to give a nice smooth flow upto the upper leading edge of the body would again solve lots of problems.

And of course ditching those daft pop-ups (I know we all love them) with recessed lamps and a smooth profiled clear cover would make an incredible difference.

What about an underbody tray to smooth air-flow AND improve downforce? maybe even a profiled cheese-grater tray (a la Lotus Esprit?)

What it comes down to is that air-flow generally likes smooth curved surfaces. Hard sharp edges in silly places (and the X has enough of them) are seriously bad news. Lets face it the X has a very small frontal sillhoette so in theory aerodynamic improvements would result in substantial gains in acceleration (even at low-mid ranges), improved fuel economy and better handling. The only problem is that by the end of it your X would look more like an MR-2 than an X<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I see where Ulix is coming from, especially in regard to street driving in the US. Unless you were seriously unconcerned about the State Patrol trooper over the next blind hill, or driving across Montana

But I also see Julian's points. Ultimately my feeling on all of it leans to Julian's last statement. Regardless of potential benefits, I just have no desire to apply any such mods to my own X for street use. Sure, I have stripped the bumpers off and am running a fiberglass front spoiler, but these were for personal preference more than performance reasons.

My bottom line is that I never picked the X1/9 because it has low wind drag

I picked it because I like the original bodylines. I think for street use there would be more practical benefit in focusing on things like engine breathing, suspension and the like than on any super-trick aero body mods...

Now, if you're talking about the track, all of it matters!

I have to say that for street use there is just one mod that would make the car safer at speed AND improve your mileage......

A shaped spoiler fitted to the rear of the roll-over bar (inplace of the chrome strip) is sorely needed to destroy the low-pressure area that builds up behind the targa.

It is actually caused by the pressure wave breaking suddenly. The pressure wave moves rearwards along the car as speed increases. At a critical point it reaches the back of the targa and everything goes to pot. A simple piece of shaped plastic would sort this all out and guide the airflow down to the tail-lid. The improvements in high-speed stability should prove quite substantial as the lift at the rear of the car would be noticibly reduced.

If I had to make a steet-mod, this would be it. Forget the big wings, front spoiler, etc. this is IMHO the single most useful thing you can do to the X's bodywork to improve overall performance. It doesn't have to be big or heavy - or even particularly noticible.

The problem is that to get it right, you're going to need some time in a wind-tunnel to ensure smooth air-flow......<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I've allready deleted the windshield chrome and filled and smothed the glass to frame joint, removed the pillar gutters,removed popups and hooded them, al la Abarth,with plex covers in the works.Nerf bars only, so the front is about as clean as I know how to make it, though a splitter and undertray sound good.I like the cleaned up,no obvious add ons look,but if a targa spoiler was realy efective,and not too obtrusive,it would be worthwhile. Any other ideas,anyone? P.S.I think Bertone did a lovely job on the X,and I dont particularly like the MR2,so any changes I make need to be visualy "clean"<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
