My question is are the 1500cc rear struts fittable on the 1300 cars without modifing the hubs? I know the 5-speed require the whole rear end setup but All I have ever worked on is the 1300 cars. Also any Koni struts still available for the X's. If not what would you recommend for autocrossing struts.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The 1300 and 1500 rear struts are fully interchangeable. When putting 1300 struts on a 1500 car, the bottom of the strut tube runs closer to the outboard CV joint, but still clears. Koni struts have not been available for X1/9 for some time. You may be able to find a used set. In general, high performance struts are hard to find. Check out Ulix' web page for more options using Rabbit strut inserts.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi guys!

I am but a humble novice at autocrossing, and have heard many X1/9 racers touting the virtues of a coil-over conversion on the X1/9 as being a generally worthy modification on the track, especially in light of the increasing difficulty in locating Konis, and most folks' assesment that KYBs, while great on the street, still feel a tad soft in autocross use...

I suspect the downside of coil-overs would be the relative expense of such a conversion... ? Can any of our autocrossing readers out there comment on the idea of coil-over suspension on the X? I myself would like to know more on that topic, as well as it is quasi-related to the original question ;) -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I'm no suspension expert, but I did the coil-over suspension modification on my X1/9.

What is it?

Basically, we're talking about a threaded tube that fit over the body of the shock. Instead of stock springs, coil-overs required racings springs that are available in a variety of length and strenght. The springs then sit on a bottom perch that could be screw or unscrew on the threaded tubes, moving the car higher or lower.

Why?
It gives you 2 big advantages: choices of springs and possibility of adjusting the height level of the car. Springs can be choosen from "as soft as the stock ones" to "stiff as a rock". Adjusting the height level is offering you the possibility of lowering the car and having a lot better handling and also to fine tune the car by doing "corner weight".

What it involves?
It is preferable to start with early X1/9 housing, the one that can be opened. The bottom perches must be cut. A ring is then inserted (and optionnally welded) over the shock mounting bracket. The threaded tube sit on that ring. The adjustable bottom perch is screw on the tubes, the spring fit over it and there is a top mount to secure the springs (to avoid lateral motion). At the top it is possible to keep the original top mount or to fit camber plates.

The biggest part of the job consist of opening the plug at the top of the struts to remove the inners (so the seals won't melt when cutting the perch or welding the ring) and cutting the original bottom perch. Fitting the new parts is a breeze. Then you should plan some time to adjust everything. Finding the good height level (so you won't scrub your tires) and making an alignment are a must.

How much it cost?
If you got the chance to find used parts, it worth it. The threaded tube, the adjustable perch and the top mount are long lasting items. Finding springs to your taste may mean making mistake by buying too soft or too hard one to start. The best idea is to try a similar car with the conversion already done.

The complete conversion (less the shocks) including four springs, the tubes, the rings, the perches, the top mounts is around $400 US for new parts.

Conclusion
This conversion isn't solving all the suspension problems since you still need good shocks to go with the coil-over. In fact, the stiffer the springs you choose, the better the suspension need to be. What seems to be the most widely used solution actually is to use kyb or tokico inserts for the VW Rabbit. Minor modifications are needed to fit them into the early Fiat housings. There is no more good inserts available for the Fiat X1/9.

I'm running on this conversion with 400 lbs springs in the front and 350 in the rear for many years. I love the way the car handle, but on bad roads, it's a tough ride. Maniacs of autocross may want stiffer springs. In fact, some of the guys who were at the FFO were having stiffer springs than that. But they barely use their Fiat on the street anymore.

My initial idea was to change springs after races, but even if it could be done quickly, it still invovles removing the wheels and the shocks, so I gave up on that.

Anybody who is serious about autocrossing should consider this as the alternative. People on a budget can stay with lowering (or cutted?) springs.

Even for street driving, this conversion has no drawbacks as long as you don't choose too stiff springs. In fact there is some advantage like the fact the springs has a smaller diameter and you will get more clearance in the wheelwell, allowing the use of wider tires, different wheels offset, etc.

I hope my answer helped some of you!
I will be happy to answer any question and to guide those who are interested in doing it.

Finally, I don't know if my typing shows my accent, but I'm a French Canadian, so I apologize for all the weird sentences ;-)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The thing is, the KYB rabbit inserts aren't all that stiff either. If you use REALLY stiff springs, such as with a coil over conversion (where you order your spring by specifyiing length and stiffness), you may want to find stiffer Rabbit insersts, such as Tokicos (sp).
