Replacement wheels

Wish you were closer as I have the wheels and tires that came on my car. Toyo RA1 185/60 13 front and 205/60 13 back. Great tires but a bit to wide for 5.5” rims but looked great.

Are those just stock CD91s? I thought they were 5" stock? 205 is a hell of a wide tire for a 5" wheel... And now I'm interested in mounting one on my CD91s. :D Did you drive on those at all? If so, how did it handle/perform? Did the tread wear suggest problems?

no wear issues at all but they do not have very many miles on them. The are very good track tires. The were not shaved down to the dry tread so the were still at the rain height. Not sure about the width now seem to remember seeing 5 1/2 on the back but I am old. When a tire is over sized the do feel a bit squirmy. It would be more exaggerated if the were on the front. The car handle great, better than a stock sized tire, but no where near as good as the new setup with 15x7 with 205s and 195s.

205/60-13 size is not recommended by the tire manufacturers on 5" wide wheels. That's why I bought some 6" wheels.

Ya a 7" is perfect for a 205. 6" is doable but on the edge.

I had 185/60 on my CD91 (standard 5") and I was not happy with the performance. I assume that 205/60 would have been even worse. Now I have MOMO 5,5" rims with 185/60 Nankang AR1. They are looking good and the car is much more stable but a 6" rim would have been optimal.

Talking about tire width vs wheel (rim) width. Aside from the handling or "looks" aspects, I've found having a tire with a little wider sidewall than the widest point of the rim is helpful in protecting the rims from curb rash. Although I'm very careful to avoid curbs, things happen once in awhile and I'd rather have the tire touch a solid object the the outside edge of the rim. And being 'old school' I prefer a wider tire over a narrow "stretched" one, but that gets back to the "looks" category. Performance/handling is a completely different issue.

I recall there was a great comment someone made in a old thread about tire sizes and fitment. We were talking about "stretch", "poke", "flush", and other related terms. And someone (@JimD perhaps?) used all of the terms in one funny sentence. Wish I could bring that post back up.

Haha. I recall being involved in a thread where something along those lines was said.
I searched a tread I created when I fit my wheels, but it wasn't there.

This thread on replacement wheels came to mind the other night while watching a TV program. There has been a popular movement in wheel styles with some circles, called "elbows". When you see them (below) you'll understand why they are called that. The style goes along with a custom car trend referred to as "slabs". Just picture a X1/9 dressed this way

Gotta love it. Like others on this forum, I've been involved in the VW scene. If this conversation took place on the VW forum it would be full of words like: "poke", "stretch", "stance", "flush", "hella flush", "lip", etc, etc. But not here, thank God.

Eastep said - The stretch of the 185/45's on my wheels will give the perfect stance with a slight poke for that toy car look. The lip will be mostly flush with the fenders, but not hella flush. ;)

Low, wide and loud; just how I like it!

Not sure how to link the post. But it was in a thread called 'tire size opinions (15'')' Started by autox19
