What is the best way to clean metallic surfaces, specially iron or aluminum casts, to get rid of the grime that 16 years of oil and dirt left on them ?. Many times solvent and a soft brush don´t seem to be enough and a wire brush will scratch the surface.
I will appreciate any suggestion.

I use a product called Castrol SuperClean. Others are Simple Green, etc. SuperClean in undiluted form shoudl take any grime off. Leave it on there for a littel while and use your soft brush.
The absolute killer cleaner is oven cleaner. This stuff is so bad that you should only use it if you really have to and are sure it won't damage anything.
I'm sure you can find something similar to SuperClean in Argentina.

If you are going to use oven cleaner, I would recommend that you take the parts off the car... it will eat plastic and tends to be hard to control (drips, etc.)
Another good product (depending on the severity of your problem) is called "Wheel Magic" it is designed to take brake dust and grime off of alloy wheels. I can only recommend its use on Aluminum, but it may work well with other metals as well. Make SURE that the parts are cool before you start... it will cook right onto the metal and be very hard to remove if the parts are hot.
