Is this something I should attempt myself? How difficult is this to get right? Is this even possible without special tools?

On a good note, the gearset is back together with new 1st/2nd gears and new 3rd/4th synchros (the 1st/2nd synchros were brand new). <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Steven, setting the preload is actually very easy.. You bolt the case together with the small
cover on the drivers side removed. You measure the preload with a feeler gauge between the small cover and the main case. The bigger the gap, the greater the preload. No special tools required. Be sure to measure with the large "o"ring removed.
If the preload is incorrect, measure the thickness of the adjusting shim with a micrometer, and order one of the appropriate thickness. Nothing too trick about it... good luck,
Steve<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It is not unusual for the diff bearings and races to be dull. If the diff was noisy in the car, you may want to consider new bearings. I have found it rare that the carrier bearings actually go bad or get really noisy unless the preload is wrong. I have only had to re-shim a diff when installing one in a different case or installing new bearings.

You will need a proper puller to remove the old roller bearing from the diff housing and a proper driver of press to install the new bearing. A bigger pain is getting the races out of the case and installing the new ones.

Steve

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I'll have to ask the PO if he noticed any diff noise, but I think he would have mentioned it. The rumbling is with the diff just sat in there and spun, no active lube (only what is present on them to begin with). I assumed the dull race meant replacement, so that is great news - it means I have everything to put the tranny back together now!
