Slow wiper speed

can anyone direct me to a thread on how to speed up the wipers on my’78? I’ve heard of the “brown wire mod” but that’s for the ‘79 and up,right?

IIRCC the brown wire threads all center around 78 & older or 81/82 & newer as far as I know there isn't anything on the 79-80. This means your in luck. Do the brown wire mod and it will help. I think there's a wiper and headlight relay mod that you can do as well. All of this info is available in the archives/ search function. GL

Vick’s has a wiper relay kit but says it’s for ‘79 and up, 6 wire? Can this be fitted to the ‘78?

I put it in my ‘86, and it’ is for a 6 wire junction block. Designed for a Spyder, some of the wires need to be lengthened to get the relays away from the corner of the hood. You will probably prefer to put athe relays inside a project box. I used Velcro tape strips to stick the box to the wiper fluid reservoir.
It definitely helped, but the BWM will also make a huge difference by itself.

The insertable wiper relay mod is the best way to do this. You can buy two standard relays, either repurpose the connectors from the catalyst distance counter or buy a pair of the connectors at AutoRicambi.

AR also has a kit for 124s which should work with modification on an X: https://autoricambi.us/collections/electrical/products/wiper-relay-kit
Vicks also sells a 124 centric kit which does need mods to work on an X: http://www.vickauto.com/newstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5_6_27&products_id=4636
AR connectors: https://autoricambi.us/collections/electrical/products/wire-connectors-6-prong
MidWestBayless connectors: https://www.midwest-bayless.com/Fia...onnector-pair-6-pin-spade-male-female-u8.aspx

I attached PDFs of the wiper relay mod threads in my last post to this thread, they do have pictures unlike the threads:

Hope that helps.

Before you go through all that, remove the wiper assembly and make sure the linkage is not rusted up and binding. It's rather common to have all the pivot points to have lost any lubrication and/or rusted up. Without taking care of that first, you are wasting your time with all manner of electrical wizardry.

Cleaning the mechanism should help. The real problem is the resistance through the two switches, your ignition switch and the wiper switch. Going to a relay set up applies direct power nearly at the wiper motor and the switches just excite the relays and are no longer the resistance element.

My cars both have freely running wiper mechanisms but are both slow.

I need to take my own advice.

Carl, you were at the tech day where DCFiats installed wiper relays into about 25 spiders and x1/9s. The wipers had at least a 50% improvement in speed on all but 2. Cleaning is not bad, but clean power is good.

Yes, Todd, I was there but who cares about that crap when my rat had neither wipers nor lights! You can crank all the 12v juice you want through that poor wiper motor but if the linkage is binding it won't help much. It's hard to be a mechanical engineer in the day of electrons.

Why spend hours fixing something right, when a $10 wiring fix does the job in 5 minutes?

Todd, is the pig for the pig roast roaming in your back yard. While I will be driving right by your house, I'll be on the way to Akron.

Piggy was at my son's house until yesterday. He shows up at my house on Friday in time to start smoking. Larry was a good pig.
