After much fighting with it, and what seems like hours with the ratchet, I managed to get it backed off far enough to clear the far end of the alt. (I mean that the end of the bolt is clear of the threaded part). But the bolt won't slide free of the bracket, so I can't get the alternator out!

I know this probably all makes no sense, but I am incredibly frustrated... I spent hours with this last night!

I turn the bottom bolt around on reinstall so that I don't have any restrictions on removing it in the future.

As for getting it out the first time, it is of course possible, but can be sticky. How much of the bolt is still preventing alternator removal?

Let me guess, the long bolt slides almost all the way out, then the head of the bolt hits the car body?

Usually, I have been able to just get it out as far as I could, then (from under the car) grab the bolt at the head end and just pull it toward the ground. It is a really tight fit sometimes, but what you can't see in there is that the bolt is usually just long enough that it is already right at the end, and just hung up on the last thread or 2. Most times just to give a tug downward will pop it out. If not, try pushing up on the loose side of the alternator bottom while pulling down on the bolt head. I have never had that fail me yet...

Then, when you put it back, slide the bolt in from the other direction

Looking at the alternator from the removed trunk panel....

The bolt is out far enough to clear the threading on the right side of the alternator - I put a valve feeler in the gap to confirm this.

It won't back out ANY further... but should simply slide out at this point. I have tried to slide it out with the top swing bolt both in and totally removed (at which point I flipped the alternator over to give me better access to the bolt.

I'm both puzzled and frustrated at this point. I have pulled, turned and pounded on this bolt from every possible angle, and it has no give. I am thinking that I may simply cut through the bolt with my dremel on the right side of the left alternator bracket - at which point I can simply drop the alternator and drill the rest of the bolt out. In it's place, I think I will use a narrower stainless bolt with a nut on the other end... it will make it easier to remove if necessary in the future.

Oh, one other thing... what is the fan on the end of the alternator cooling? There is a little grill inside the trunk that butts up against it... is this to suck hot air out of the trunk? If so, I may just take this fan off... it makes belt removal more difficult - which is now much more important because of the belt mod I did removing the A/C compressor (which may or may not work... if anyone wants it, it's yours for the cost of shipping). I rigged the belt around all three pulleys (alt, water pump and crank) with a 36 inch belt. It was the shortest belt I could get to clear the pulleys, and isn't tight enough, which is the reason for pulling the alt... I need to modify that pulley in some way to give me more clearance so I can use a 35 inch belt.

Anyone else done this mod? How did you handle it?

I would suggest you to install the original belts, one for the water pump and another for the alternator (but since you already removed the AC you will have to find a smaller belt for the Alt.)

As Ulix noted earlier the halves that conform the crank pulley for the water pump sometimes tend to rust and stick together, but after you get them loose they are very easy to remove and more important easy to adjust. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I did this on my '83. Then I installed a '74 exhaust manifold. I realized later that if I tried to remove the bolt to the left, it would hit the manifold, ergo I had to remove the exhaust manifold to get the alternator out!!
Fortunately I never had to remove the alternator until I sold the car

So I just removed the wheel, used a screwdriver and a hammer to tap the bolt to the right, grabbed the bolt head with a vise and pulled it right out... Maybe an option for you? After that, be sure to refit the bolt with the head to the left and the nut in the alternator recess.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hey all... wanted to report on my weekend successes... I got the alt out, and replaced the bolt. In the process, I also decided to re-position the alt to give it greater belt tension (and will ease future belt removal) as well as move it a bit further away from the rising heat of the exhaust manifold.

with the top bolt removed, I swung the alt towards the back of the car (now possible becuase of the removal of the a/c compressor - which is still available for the cost of shipping

) I needed to fabricate an extension for the swing arm, and simply cut a piece of boiler plate about 1 inch wide by 6 inches long, with a hole drilled at each end. It enables me to keep the tension tight, and have no flex in the bracket, while keeping it in the aft position.

The electrical feed is more consistent now, and the voltometer doesn't drop under load anymore - it used to drop when the lights and heater were on. Now I just need to figure out the reason why the voltage still drops with the wipers on. I replaced the wiring to them, and it didn't help. However, since i never drive the car in the rain, it is only an issue when I want to wash the grime off the windows.

Oh, in other news, I saw a new X around town this weekend... its a late 70's carbed car I think (based on the bumpers, etc..) taht has a reall CHEESY looking air scoop on the passengers side of the engine lid and a rear wing that doesn't fit well (looks like it came off of a fiero or something... maybe a JC Whitney special). Other than that, the car looked pretty solid. I'm sure I'll see it around again at some point.

I'll update on the alt mod when the weather is better and I am driving the car... right now, the garage doors are blocked by a huge snow pile, so I couldn't get any of my cars out if I wanted to!
