The case is the primary difference that would prohibit the direct swap from a Strada into your X. The shifter comes out the back of the strada case and the front of the X case.

If you want to make the swap, either put the entire gearset and differential from the strada into the X case, or simply swap over the ring and pinion into the complete X transmission.

I don't know what ratio sets were offered in the Strada, but I do know that finding Stradas, even in salvage yards, is difficult.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It sounds like the Phil Ward book is a bit misleading. It basically says "if a transmission is sourced from a 128 or Strada the bellhousing will have to be changed". It sounds a bit more involved than that!

I'm not sure what I'm going to find once the 5-speed is torn down, I know that 2nd is useless and who knows how many times it's been crunched. If the Strada had similar gears and a slightly higher final then it sounded like a sweet core to start on. If there's a possibility that the gears are also higher, then maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The shifter is in the bellhousing half of the case, so changing that half would also change the shifter. However, it is a REALLY bad idea to be mixing case halfs. The cases are machined as a matched pair and it is almost impossible to get everything shimmed and spaced correctly if you mix them up.

There is no real trick to putting the strada guts in an X case. It should go right in with no problems. If you are concerned about the ratios from the strada box, just change the final drive gear and leave the X1/9 ratio set in place. You would only have to remove the ring gear from the strada differential and install it on the X1/9 differential, then swap the counter shaft from the strada gearset into the X1/9 gearset and its done.

I have done this same swap on a Yugo, a 128 and several X1/9s. Only I was always swapping to a shorter final drive, not a taller one. I personally can't imagine why you would want to install a taller final drive. A friend of mine has a 1500 X fitted with a 4.86 final drive in place of the stock 4.08. I love it! But then if you spent most of your time on the interstate cruising at high speed, maybe the taller gear would be better.
