So far I've got a set of campagnolo ultra light 13x5.5 wheels, yoko avs 185's, a set of '74 bumpers which I have to figure out how to mount on my '76 (!), and a supersprint exhaust which will be mounted to a '74 downpipe (a dual pipe setup)with the deletion of the cat. Now I'm turning to springs and struts. I've found and will soon purchase a set of Jamex sport springs, and would like new struts to accompany them. I see that the two ovbious options are KYB's and Konis. The Koni's are the sport version and are five way adjustable, while the KYB's are not adjustable but are a bit firmer than the stock struts. Which is the best bang for the buck with the Konis at $150 each and the KYB's at $90 each? Does anyone have any experience with either of these? If so I'd love to hear about it! Thanks in advance for your response! It's much appreciated! Happy Holidays to everyone!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Rory,

this is a short story. Konis are NLA. Pretty much your only choice is KYB. You should be able to get them for less than $90 though I think.

Who sells these Jamex springs?

You should consider a front swaybar. Makes a big difference on lean and crisp turn-in.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Well, I'm looking at this dilemma as well. If you really want to get crazy you cna do a couple of things. Use Ulix's Rabbit strut conversion (pretty cool, BTW) and buy some adjustable units for the Bunny, like Tokico Illumina's, etc.

Or you can get some custom built double adjustable coil-over struts from Ground Control (http://www.ground-control.com) which forgoes using stock springs for regular racing springs. You can have them modify the specs to make them shorter to lower the car without running out of travel, very nice...

Either way, I wish you luck,

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Yes, front and rear use the same inserts.
The KYB Rabbit inserts I used are not all that stiff. Good for the front with stock or slightly stiffer springs, but I probably wouldn't use them on the rear or with very stiff fronts. They were a little soft for my Faza Stage 2 front springs.

It also seems that other Rabbit inserts don't fit. Definitely the Tokicos won't. Myron S. tried it.
The Fiat strut tubes are thinner than most other struts and that is the problem.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Rory,

I hesitate to join this thread as money does not appear to be a consideration here... and MAX performance is.

But my butt tells me I've got all the struts and stiffness I want outta a 1 1/2 inch spring cut and a set of Gabriel Cartridges for the front.

(The stock innards are removed and the cartridge installed)

My '79 rides firm, flat and true with no dive or plough and does not run a sway bar... I was considering one... but don't see a need for it.

I understand they are not available for the rear but read somewhere they can be found...

Anyway... I paid 29.00 each at Pep Boys and found them a few months back at http://www.wrenchead.com for 26.50 plus free shipping. PartsAmerica may be a good resource also.

I also purchased a spring compressor from Harbor Freight for $7.99 on sale and it worked flawlessly. (http://www.harborfreight.com) After cutting the springs... it was not needed to reinstall.

Anyway... there you have an inexpensive... but what I feel is quite an EFFECTIVE alternative.

Good Luck,

Tony <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

As far as the bars(s) go... I don't think I have the proverbial CHUTZPAH to push it any harder!

I need better and bigger tires and wheels as it goes... I tend to loose the front end first... have adjusted tire pressure to 14 psi front and 38 psi in the rear for a balanced drift using 185SR70X13's on some old Ansen 13x5.5 aftermarket wheels.

What bar(s) have you used? I have heard the one JCW supplies for about 100 bucks is quite good.

I also just came across C.Obert's specials on KYB Struts I'll list against the other post also... $69.50 each.

The bars that JC Whitney sells are Addco units. These are about the best you can hope for as an aftermarket bar. I have used an Addco front bar on my street cars for years. I much prefer the tighter feel the bar gives the front end of the car. As for balance, you might think the car has more understeer, but that is only a perception.

BTW, 14 psi in the front tires is too low. I use about 30/32 front/rear for everyday driving and 32/35 for more spirited use. At 14 psi a street tire will have no stability.

Thinking about what Steve said about the sway bar... it might, or could be the solution I (always) needed for the front end if.... in fact it was an inner tire "lifting" in a corner that was contributing to the lack of traction.

It sure appeared to be handling "flat" though. I think the sway bar will be another item for the list...

Saw your other thread on Hugo's trans... and appreciate your ethics concerning your "business".

It does appear to me that there are MANY folks that could use your services though...

Do you have an exchange price or do you bill for labor and parts? If so, what would the range be short of cracked casings for an X?

Also... did you read my comments on FEDEX? DO you know of any cheaper, faster, better way to ship heavy stuff?

Thanks again,

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->What I have been doing is charging a flat rate of $250 labor plus parts and shipping. The customer has the choice of either buying the parts (from a reputable supplier) and having them shipped to me (I will supply a parts list after teardown and inspection of your transmission). Or I can supply the parts and add them to the labor charge. I have a large inventory of good used parts and some new parts and I can get almost anything new. I have everything from cases, ring and pinions, diffs, shafts, gears, etc... I really doesn't matter how broke it is, I can fix it.

I can also ship you an exchange unit with a core charge and refund all or part of the core charge back to you after receipt and inspection of the core. Or I can sell a unit outright and you keep the core. I prefer not to sell outright as good useable cores are getting harder to find.

I have done a number of special requests too. I have built 128 transmissions with updated gearsets, built boxes with different gear ratio sets, different ring and pinions and a number of fully blueprinted competition units for both road racing and autocross.

I have been shipping via UPS, typical cost is about $50 for the eastern US. Fed-Ex ground is a few dollars cheaper, but more difficult for me to use due to my location. I ship larger transmissions (manuals and automatics for domestic and import cars and trucks) via truck lines and found this to be the most economical method for larger units.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I just ordered new front and rear KYB GR-2s for my 80 X today from Rodney over at Phils, Inc. in Evanston, IL for $221.20 ($51.80 ea + $14 s/h). Their phone # is 877-750-7251. KYB's online lookup lists different part nos. for the front and rear struts (Rear - KYB # 233004, Front - KYB # 233003). Check out this link for more info on Phil's and KYB struts - http://www.philsinc.com/kyb.html

If you want new-old-stock (NOS) rear struts, call Dave at Apple Motors in Denver (303-421-1922). I talked to him today too, but he wanted $135 each plus S/H. He said he can also get the Koni's and KYB's, but nowhere near Phil's prices. They can also do customization work, if that is of interest to you.

It is the inserts for teh early OEM struts that are the same all around.
