I feel compelled to open with a big fat apology for the out of control situation I have fueled in the forum with my recent [deleted] statement that the site could be shut down. I have to tell you guys & gals, the enthusiast community we have here just never ceases to blow my mind.
First of all, EVERYBODY RELAX! The website is out of immediate danger and these forums are NOT going away!!
I have quite a number of separate but entangled issues to address here in order to restore the groove and squash all these damn insane rumors and wild speculation. Again I apologize, I had NO IDEA that single post would generate such an overwhelming reaction from all of you! Believe me, this place must be growing a tremendous following, more than even I had realized - I have posted motivational messages in the past that were FAAAR more desparate-sounding than that one, and have received only the piddliest handful of reactions, and an even smaller handful of actual donations. I had no reason to believe that the post this time would generate any more of a response than it ever would have in the past, but apparently that was the error in my judgement, becuase people DID react, and BIGTIME, and the spark lit a huge fire I did not intend to start.
Let me say a few things about the financial situation of SeaX, XANA and the website. FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT (ie: if you don't take a damn thing else away from here, take this) is that I got a massively HUGE response in comparison to the one I expected the post would generate, based on past results of similar messages, and when I was not online immediately thereafter to respond to your responses, everyone sort of took the ball and ran with it - I don't blame you for that, folks, what else can one do when there's no more information, but GEEZ - I don't know where some of these dollar cost estimates are coming from, but I am sure glad YOU aren't the ones I need to pay, or we'd really be hurtin'! The site does not cost THAT MUCH to operate, not that much at all. We're talking SMALL money here!
The reasons that I emphasized THIS situation so strongly were because a] every time I have had to pass the collection tray around in the past, nothing short of a "WE ARE GOING TO DIIIE" alert would even illicit much more than a yawn and a couple of eye rubs from the audience, and B] for really the first time - I was in a personal situation where I could not even cover the SMALL amount myself, and as a result of that, there WAS a REAL and imminent possibility that the site would have had the plug pulled on it if I could not cough up the dough...
Let me tell you, when you have ZERO dollars, ONE dollar seems like a lot of money to have to pay someone! I was merely hoping to generate enough concern (which usually just comes from a very small handful of long-time regulars) that a few of you might kick a FEW bucks my way to help me cover the thing for only the next month or two, until I am employed and again able to do it my damn self. I had no reason to believe this response would be any different than any time before, and usually we would ask for some help like this and get maybe 3 or 4 of you to send in maybe $5, $10 or in some unusual instances $20. We were just looking to raise about 40 or 50 bucks, and for crying out loud we have an absolute flood of you responding this time, we're blown away, and I NEVER thought I would hear myself say this, but for chrissakes YOU'RE SENDING TOO MUCH MONEY!!

In any event, each and every one of you have truly touched my Pillsbury-doughboy-spot with such an amazing outcry and show of support! You have no idea how much that just makes me burn to get back in the saddle and give this site and these organizations the desparately-needed shot in the arm they (and all of you) so richly deserve. I intend to do just that, the wheels behind the scenes are starting to turn on the next levels of SeaX, XANA and the web presences even as we speak, and HOT DAMN you have all got me fired up!!
I hear several of you asking the questions, "what are the expenses? how much does this all cost?" I want to address these questions in such a way as to put all of you back at ease, but I hesitate to discuss hard dollar amounts just yet. This is becuase, although the organizations of XANA and SeattleX1/9 are technically set up to be separate entities, the way things are currently running, their respective web presences are hopelessly entangled with one another. This complicates my being able to separate the web expenses for each one into tidy figures off the top of my head, because so many parts of both sites rely on key elements that are (at present) shared or supporting both.
[text cut] We pay to own the URLs http://www.seattlex19.com , http://www.seattlex19.org , http://come.to/xana.org and a plan is currently in motion to purchase at least one, perhaps 2 more names at some point in the not-too-distant future, but I don't want to give too much away about that yet heehee! [text cut]. Then there is the matter of the Burlee server, [text cut], and it houses several key components of both sites, mainly html pages but some images as well. The vast bulk of the images which are used by both sites and the forums, including a handful of critical html files we CANNOT do without are stored on an Earthlink server, [text cut]. Then there are of course the "free" spaces we have in use, such as space on the Angelfire servers, where mainly things like the SeaX Photo Gallery pages & images are living, along with so much of the SeaX site resources like the 5-speed 101 page, the Online FI guide, the X1/9 Specs & Data section etc. [text cut]. Then there is Network54, ahh good ol N54 which was originally free, until they started hammering our audience with the world's crappiest banner ads (remember "shock the monkey" or "women of the wwf" anyone?) - which was quasi-tolerable. Then came the 16-color flashing casino ads, then the pop-up windows filled with CRAP, the ones that pop open on every page transition and I decided that I would rather pay the damn fee myself than to continue allowing such intrusive crap to deface the forums I have worked so hard to establish and detail. [text cut], that's the best money I ever spent on the forums!!
So you see, I am not lying when I say these things ARE costing money, but I think some of the speculation that flared up was somewhat excessive. The majority of expenses are things that - under normal circumstances - I can take care of myself, which I do not find bothersome, because it maintains all of our site's resources in the fashion in which I founded them - FREE TO YOU.
Anyway, I would HIGHLY recommend that you all stop panicking now. Holly and I received 3 donations on the first day after! [text cut] and then I came to the site today to clean up the archives, figuring the same old tactic would have generated the same old responses to the post in question [text cut] and when I arrived I saw - to my horror - how things had progressed on that topic in my absence.
You all amaze me, you truly do, never what I expect - I guess that is what I love so much about you all. So I want to say this. I wish to extend a personal THANK YOU to every one of you who has responded, in forum, email, and all other means, for your dazzling show of support! Make no mistake you all have fueled me up and I now have a fire under my ass to really come back online and plow full steam into my dusty vacant neglected duties!

In any event I will not (you hear me out there? you know who you are) be accused of trying to sap a penny from any of you. That is not only ridiculous, it is an insult to me.

Although I've never personally met you, I've seen what a tremendous role that you have, and by the sounds of it, will play in the future.
I would like to be one of the first to say THANK YOU for all that you have done for this site. Without it, I'd be pushing my cars instead of driving them (well, driving one of them any way). I would like to apologize to you personally for ever questioning your integrity. Being born and raised in California didn't help me too much (sorry Tony, Gilles, and anyone else in LA LA land). The post that started me thinking was the one from Tim on Aug, 10 and then the one from Tony on the same date. I figured, damn, if Tony doesn't know what's going on here then maybe this could be a bad deal.
My vote is to put the money toward any future site expenses that may arise. I probably wouldn't even had voted if I hadn't read your previous post and rushed right down and stuck a check in the mail to you. What a horrible story! I can only hope that all is well and you and your wife are safe. Thank God that you have some friends there that could help you.
Anyway, I'm waiting with baited breathe to see what the future has to offer for this site. If it's only half as good as what we already have, it will be a great addition. I only hope that I will be able to offer some sort of assistance to whatever you have planned.

Post a simple statement of your expenses and income... and then ya don't haveto tap dance to explain yurself or make excuses.
If we all can see there are, let us say, 500 dollars a year in (projected) expenses each year... then I'm sure we could get 10 dollars a piece outta 50 folks once a year.
Then you're OK and we all feel COMFORTABLE about where the money's going.
I guess you can tell I'm the tightwad of the bunch by now... but I have been known to leave 100 dollar tips for dinner... and I also won't WASTE a quarter if I feel I'm not getting my money's worth.
I feel if we list everything up front, good folks like us will support it.
Right now... I WANT to pay my FAIR share... but thanks to the over-abundance of a few... I have been DENIED that PRIVELEDGE! Sending you more money now is of no use.
Maybe "planning" is not your bag... feast OR famon is.

I was just kidding about that books crack, that is not at all related to the actual reasoning in my decision to turn back the donations, and keep in mind that it is NOT the large contributions of a few dedicated souls that has denied the rest the right to buck up, it is the harsh and unfair judgemental commentary of one misguided individual so if you want me to accept the money for upcoming use in XANA site improvements, you need to take the matter up with that guy (of course, I see he has posted further up the forum and I am working up from the bottom of the threads page, so who knows, maybe this will all be moot in a minute or so)... I feel compelled to open with a big fat apology for the out of control situation I have fueled in the forum with my recent [deleted] statement that the site could be shut down. I have to tell you guys & gals, the enthusiast community we have here just never ceases to blow my mind.
First of all, EVERYBODY RELAX! The website is out of immediate danger and these forums are NOT going away!!
I have quite a number of separate but entangled issues to address here in order to restore the groove and squash all these damn insane rumors and wild speculation. Again I apologize, I had NO IDEA that single post would generate such an overwhelming reaction from all of you! Believe me, this place must be growing a tremendous following, more than even I had realized - I have posted motivational messages in the past that were FAAAR more desparate-sounding than that one, and have received only the piddliest handful of reactions, and an even smaller handful of actual donations. I had no reason to believe that the post this time would generate any more of a response than it ever would have in the past, but apparently that was the error in my judgement, becuase people DID react, and BIGTIME, and the spark lit a huge fire I did not intend to start.
Let me say a few things about the financial situation of SeaX, XANA and the website. FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT (ie: if you don't take a damn thing else away from here, take this) is that I got a massively HUGE response in comparison to the one I expected the post would generate, based on past results of similar messages, and when I was not online immediately thereafter to respond to your responses, everyone sort of took the ball and ran with it - I don't blame you for that, folks, what else can one do when there's no more information, but GEEZ - I don't know where some of these dollar cost estimates are coming from, but I am sure glad YOU aren't the ones I need to pay, or we'd really be hurtin'! The site does not cost THAT MUCH to operate, not that much at all. We're talking SMALL money here!
The reasons that I emphasized THIS situation so strongly were because a] every time I have had to pass the collection tray around in the past, nothing short of a "WE ARE GOING TO DIIIE" alert would even illicit much more than a yawn and a couple of eye rubs from the audience, and B] for really the first time - I was in a personal situation where I could not even cover the SMALL amount myself, and as a result of that, there WAS a REAL and imminent possibility that the site would have had the plug pulled on it if I could not cough up the dough...
Let me tell you, when you have ZERO dollars, ONE dollar seems like a lot of money to have to pay someone! I was merely hoping to generate enough concern (which usually just comes from a very small handful of long-time regulars) that a few of you might kick a FEW bucks my way to help me cover the thing for only the next month or two, until I am employed and again able to do it my damn self. I had no reason to believe this response would be any different than any time before, and usually we would ask for some help like this and get maybe 3 or 4 of you to send in maybe $5, $10 or in some unusual instances $20. We were just looking to raise about 40 or 50 bucks, and for crying out loud we have an absolute flood of you responding this time, we're blown away, and I NEVER thought I would hear myself say this, but for chrissakes YOU'RE SENDING TOO MUCH MONEY!!

In any event, each and every one of you have truly touched my Pillsbury-doughboy-spot with such an amazing outcry and show of support! You have no idea how much that just makes me burn to get back in the saddle and give this site and these organizations the desparately-needed shot in the arm they (and all of you) so richly deserve. I intend to do just that, the wheels behind the scenes are starting to turn on the next levels of SeaX, XANA and the web presences even as we speak, and HOT DAMN you have all got me fired up!!
I hear several of you asking the questions, "what are the expenses? how much does this all cost?" I want to address these questions in such a way as to put all of you back at ease, but I hesitate to discuss hard dollar amounts just yet. This is becuase, although the organizations of XANA and SeattleX1/9 are technically set up to be separate entities, the way things are currently running, their respective web presences are hopelessly entangled with one another. This complicates my being able to separate the web expenses for each one into tidy figures off the top of my head, because so many parts of both sites rely on key elements that are (at present) shared or supporting both.
[text cut] We pay to own the URLs http://www.seattlex19.com , http://www.seattlex19.org , http://come.to/xana.org and a plan is currently in motion to purchase at least one, perhaps 2 more names at some point in the not-too-distant future, but I don't want to give too much away about that yet heehee! [text cut]. Then there is the matter of the Burlee server, [text cut], and it houses several key components of both sites, mainly html pages but some images as well. The vast bulk of the images which are used by both sites and the forums, including a handful of critical html files we CANNOT do without are stored on an Earthlink server, [text cut]. Then there are of course the "free" spaces we have in use, such as space on the Angelfire servers, where mainly things like the SeaX Photo Gallery pages & images are living, along with so much of the SeaX site resources like the 5-speed 101 page, the Online FI guide, the X1/9 Specs & Data section etc. [text cut]. Then there is Network54, ahh good ol N54 which was originally free, until they started hammering our audience with the world's crappiest banner ads (remember "shock the monkey" or "women of the wwf" anyone?) - which was quasi-tolerable. Then came the 16-color flashing casino ads, then the pop-up windows filled with CRAP, the ones that pop open on every page transition and I decided that I would rather pay the damn fee myself than to continue allowing such intrusive crap to deface the forums I have worked so hard to establish and detail. [text cut], that's the best money I ever spent on the forums!!
So you see, I am not lying when I say these things ARE costing money, but I think some of the speculation that flared up was somewhat excessive. The majority of expenses are things that - under normal circumstances - I can take care of myself, which I do not find bothersome, because it maintains all of our site's resources in the fashion in which I founded them - FREE TO YOU.
Anyway, I would HIGHLY recommend that you all stop panicking now. Holly and I received 3 donations on the first day after! [text cut] and then I came to the site today to clean up the archives, figuring the same old tactic would have generated the same old responses to the post in question [text cut] and when I arrived I saw - to my horror - how things had progressed on that topic in my absence.
You all amaze me, you truly do, never what I expect - I guess that is what I love so much about you all. So I want to say this. I wish to extend a personal THANK YOU to every one of you who has responded, in forum, email, and all other means, for your dazzling show of support! Make no mistake you all have fueled me up and I now have a fire under my ass to really come back online and plow full steam into my dusty vacant neglected duties!

In any event I will not (you hear me out there? you know who you are) be accused of trying to sap a penny from any of you. That is not only ridiculous, it is an insult to me.

Although I've never personally met you, I've seen what a tremendous role that you have, and by the sounds of it, will play in the future.
I would like to be one of the first to say THANK YOU for all that you have done for this site. Without it, I'd be pushing my cars instead of driving them (well, driving one of them any way). I would like to apologize to you personally for ever questioning your integrity. Being born and raised in California didn't help me too much (sorry Tony, Gilles, and anyone else in LA LA land). The post that started me thinking was the one from Tim on Aug, 10 and then the one from Tony on the same date. I figured, damn, if Tony doesn't know what's going on here then maybe this could be a bad deal.
My vote is to put the money toward any future site expenses that may arise. I probably wouldn't even had voted if I hadn't read your previous post and rushed right down and stuck a check in the mail to you. What a horrible story! I can only hope that all is well and you and your wife are safe. Thank God that you have some friends there that could help you.
Anyway, I'm waiting with baited breathe to see what the future has to offer for this site. If it's only half as good as what we already have, it will be a great addition. I only hope that I will be able to offer some sort of assistance to whatever you have planned.

Post a simple statement of your expenses and income... and then ya don't haveto tap dance to explain yurself or make excuses.
If we all can see there are, let us say, 500 dollars a year in (projected) expenses each year... then I'm sure we could get 10 dollars a piece outta 50 folks once a year.
Then you're OK and we all feel COMFORTABLE about where the money's going.
I guess you can tell I'm the tightwad of the bunch by now... but I have been known to leave 100 dollar tips for dinner... and I also won't WASTE a quarter if I feel I'm not getting my money's worth.
I feel if we list everything up front, good folks like us will support it.
Right now... I WANT to pay my FAIR share... but thanks to the over-abundance of a few... I have been DENIED that PRIVELEDGE! Sending you more money now is of no use.
Maybe "planning" is not your bag... feast OR famon is.
If so... let me be first on the list when the next famon hits.
