To far gone?

Hello

I found these rims and was wondering if they look to far gone or look ok. They appear to be stripped of paint from pics and not sure what the white crud is, probably pitting is my guess. Has anyone refinished cd 31's and what is your opinion on these.

The white crud looks like aluminum corrosion. It doesn't look unsalvageable at all though just from that.

Assuming there aren't any cracks you could get them media blasted, any divots filled in, and then painted.

Oh that's great, I was told they are magnesium, either way,no cracks or welds, and they are straight. So I will give it a shot and see how they come out Thank you for your reply.

Those should be magnesium. I believe that is magnesium corrosion or efflorescence you are seeing.

It is one of the reasons you must coat magnesium alloys as soon as possible after casting or in the refinishing process.

Vapor blasting will do well with removing this with minimal surface damage.

These are great rims but their current condition should reduce their current value notably.

Lol I'm hoping they will be better than a 5 foot finish. I will take that as they are good enough to give it a shot.

If they are magnesium then I'd have them inspected by an expert. Magnesium can become brittle and old magnesium wheels can be dangerous if it has corroded too far. I'm certainly not an expert on this so cannot tell from the pictures if they are good or not.

Exactly. Which is why he should just let me take them off his hands for free. I'm thinking about his safety. Anyone else with old Magnesium wheels send me a DM, I'll take them too.

If they are mag's don't try to weld on them.

THIS ^^^^ is why I love XWeb so much. The care people show.

I'll do this one better.... send the wheels to me and I'll send you a gift card for your favorite local coffee place for $50. You'll be getting potentially dangerous wheels off your hands and also be able to enjoy some good coffee or tea too!
