tranny upgrade

Anybody out there have a lead on a '79 zagato transaxle? I want to upgrade the 5th gear in my 76 scorp. I'm told that only the carbed,79 zagato had a taller 5th gear set.

I wonder

I was told the 164 Alfa used the same tranny as the Scorp or at least based on the same tranny. I wonder what the final drive is from that car and if would fit our car. (the diff nothing else) Myself, I want to make a close ratio tranny.

My friend is installing a 164 engine and transmission in his Scorpion. The transmissions are not the same.

This transaxle was designed by Citroen during the short time when Fiat and Citroen worked together on a few projects. Versions of this transaxle was used in the Lotus Esprit and a number of Citroen cars.

Some where there on the Monte-carlo / Scorpion pages is a list of the various gear ratios used in variations of this transaxle.

The gearing found in the 79's carb Lancia was intended to allow the car to meet emissions with the carb by lowering the revs of the engine. OK, but given the stock 1800cc twin cam is already so down on power, would this be a wise and choice?

taller ratio

I have upgraded to the Fiat 2lt engine. I rebuilt it with 84.4 oversize pistons with 8mm domes. I have mounted a 32/36 weber. I think I now have enough power for a taller ratio... I hope!

In my opinion, based on personal experience, the fifth gear swap only addresses one fifth of the problem if you're running the 2 liter. You really need the Monte final drive to have a proper gear match to the 2 liter engine. My 2 liter has very little bottom end due to the 40/80 cams, so the Scorpion final drive works okay, but if your engine is torquey, you'll be wanting the Monte final drive.

yep,

And where,oh where am I to find one? tried the monte hospital, they seem unwilling to part with the one they have.

got It!

I have a monte tranny coming from the monte hospital in england. They say they have another one there too, if anyone is interested.

3:71 final drive

There is a Lancia dealer in South Africa that I bought a 3:71 final drive form for my 2L X19. I believe the price was about $400 delivered. It was for the Monte Carlo and was a new unit. It was several years ago and I don't have his address but he does e-mail me occasionally with sale items so I will forward the link the next time he e-mails me. A real help in autocrossing as it reduced shifting but not the total answer. I also have a 4.21 and 4.36 R/P which are way to low. The gearing in the tranny 1 thru 5 seem to be really bad for autocrossing given the limited RPM of the 2L as opposed to the SOHC but probably fine for the street. The taller 5 gear sounds like a good thing to me for the street.

Great info Repunzel

I had no idea Citeron was involved with this transaxle. All I know is that is a heavy, overbuilt, hard shifting monster but does seem to be really strong. I have really beat the living daylights out of mine in the X19 with a built 2L turbo with no problems.

yeah,

My next search is for that rare fifth gear to go in my monte tranny. I think that would do everything I want then.
