I post some pictures of a turbo X, with an aftermarket kit, which I thought you would all find interesting.

Intstead, most of the conversations have turned towards how it does not work, bad design, and so on.

During this time, I have been telling Michael what a great bunch of people that we have on this forum, and that we are all in it together for enjoyment and fun. We were excited that we could show yet another option for increasing the horse power from the X. He was excited because being a first time Fiat owner, he was looking for a good support group that could answer questions.

I have spent alot of time trying to get people together to enjoy these cars and have a good time. At Ashland 2000, I came with my Ford F350 loaded full of parts and for $5, it was take what you could haul.

So, after my rant, I just wanted to ask, are we going to have a good time and discuss ideas, or are we instead going to start acting like a couple of other car clubs that I know.

Finally, Warren, I just got through with a ride in the car, yes we were able to get it running and yes it did drive. What was it like? Contrary to your popular belief, such as the "boom" part of your post, it was a fun drive. Up to 4500 it drove like a regular X, from there on out, things got a little bit more exciting.

It's late, and I will stop now. If I have offended anyone, I am sorry, but I just had to get this off my chest.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Eric, I just re-read all the posts on the subject, and I didn't see anything objectionable at all?? Lots of interest, praise for the quality of some of the parts, well-founded questions about it's drivability, and some missunderstanding about how a turbo works. I didn't see anything attacking or negative in there at all. There are many ways to turbo a car, all have good and bad points, and while this set up might not be the "best", it's a working setup on an X, and the owner has every right to be proud. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm sure no one meant any offense to the owner or the car.

How cool that you guys got it running already!
I wish I could have taken a drive in it too. Can you share some more information about it? Do you know if it uses the stock US compression ratio (like the Legend turbo on the Spider)? Any idea on how much boost it has (does it have a boost gauge?)
Was this a commercially offered kit? Do you know who offered it?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Viva la turbo, I was just trying to shed a little light on the turbo subject ( it wasn't my intent to offend you). I have done a pile of research into the turbo thing and I was turboing an X my self accept I don't want to go through a lot of parts ( I have a led foot.). The project I was doing looked very close to yours apart from the carb placement. Some people in this forum I agree have made some comments on something they know little about. I have no doubt in my mind that your car works well. All of us in the forum I am sure weren't trying to offend you, just a little misunderstood.
By the way I have a turbo for sale that will come in at about 2000rpm with 10psi boost= 130hp for sale/trade if any one is interested.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->From a 1600 Jetta diesel, so this turbo can only be used for a blowthrough application.( no positive seals on the shaft. ) The diesels max revs are around 4500- 5000, so for this turbo to work it has to come in around 2000. With the Fiat motor, it pushes more air on the exhaust with the big bore that it has. Therefor the turbo will spool up faster than it did in the diesel. It has a new seal and turbine ( which was replaced by a professional turbo builder), when I took it apart for inspection I drooped the turbine and chipped it. It is a Garrett T3 and it will come with the fabed exhaust pipe and bracket. I will help who ever buys the turbo to complete the install. ( via E-Mail, I live in Canada)
The turbo should make 128.71hp at 6psi boost on a 1500 X1/9 so if the weight was say 1940lbs the car should do 0-60 in around 6.5sec. I pulled these numbers off of a program I have to calculate performance. I will e-mail pics to anyone interested. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Eric,

I think one of the biggest problems with our written language is its inability to tell you at a glance where it is coming from... or the CONTEXT.

I think Tim was correct when he said he was just saying what he thought... or "thinking out loud". When written, it can sometimes sound pretty "contrary". So does my thinking, by the way.

I'm not very good at it, but I am a recovering extrovert and, with the help of Prozac, am attempting to do my thinking INTERNALLY, then weigh it against what I might say, determining the benefits to myself, my listener, to both of us, and sometimes even to those around me.

So I say all that to simply say this... Tim and possibly some others, I am sure meant no malice... They were simply thinking out-loud "critically" as to the benefits... And if ya look at their messages closely, they OBVIOUSLY thought the possible advantages OUTWEIGHED all the negative stuff they were thinking when they said, "let us know what happens!"

It also helps to re-read (edit) ALOUD what you write and that will often times shed a new light on what was written.

LASTLY... looking at that photo... it sure looks like it would be rather simple to mount the carb back on the manifold and PUSH the air thru it!!!

It would kinda be interesting to see which method would provide the most benefit!

Regards,

Tony

Recall that a carb works by creating a pressure differential between the throat and the float bowl, thus sucking fuel through the jets. The float bowl is at ambient pressure and the throat is at a lower pressure due to the venturi effect, ie as the air is accelerated the pressure decreases.

What would happen if the air passing through the carb is at a pressure greater than ambient? Such as after it's passed through a turbo. You'd fill your float bowl with air and go nowhere.

That is why the carb is placed BEFORE the turbo.

I understand that the air that is ACCELERATED past the venturi CREATES the difference in pressure that allows the ambient pressure to force the fuel into the space that has a lesser pressure.

If one were to force 5 pounds of air into a carb, the pressure on both sides of the venturi is the same until the piston goes down, creating less pressure. Now having a total of 20 lbs (15lbs ambient + 5 lbs boost) AVAILABLE, more air passing by the venturi, will draw (force) more fuel into the cylinder.

Back in 1963, Studebaker used a definate BLOW-THRU system on their V8s by adding a top to their carbs and piping the output of a supercharger to it. I think it caused a few leaks... So in '64 they enclosed the whole carb!

Most today only add air pressure and use fuel injection... So I'm not positive about the theory... but I sure have seen alot of BLOW-THRUs as well as the "suckers"! I'm unsure what they modified to do either... We'll need an EXPERT to tell us that!

Tony

Even by enclosing the whole carb I'm not sure that alone would work. I bet there would be other mods to the carb that would be required.

I can assure you that turbo systems that blow through a carb do not use a normally aspirated carb. And if they do, it's definitely unmodified. But hey, I've never built a Turbo car, so what would I know?

Thanks for the kudos on my page, the car in the middle is a Lancia Stratos, one of the most famous rally cars of all time.

So when the boost happens the fuel pressure goes up and you dont get any pressure back through the float or run the car lean. If you have 5 psi boost you should have 8psi fuel pressure. Turboing a car is not just bolting on a turbo and expecting things to work. I would suggest any one interested in doing this sort of thing to do some reasearch before making assumptions. I would suggest buying the book TURBOCHARGERS by HP Books.
This book explains in plain English how things are done. And it will save you alot of money in the long run if you decide to take on a project like this.

Of course yur right... So an electric pump with some kind of an adjustable regulator?

If You have to turn on fuel pressure... would you/could you use another pump in "parallel" triggered by a boost pressure increase?

Just conversing... I'll go buy the book eventually!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The best book out (that I've found, and I have a lot of them) is "MAXIMUM BOOST" by Corkey Bell. This is by far the best book in explaining the whats, hows and don'ts of turbo or supercharging.

The author is the founder of one of the largest aftermarket turbo maufacturers and knows what he's talking about.

BTW, the 'best' way of using a carb in a turbo system is to 'blow-through' it. You can't intercool a 'draw-though' (or 'suck-through) system as the fuel will separate from the air and blow off valves are a no-no (vents fuel/air mixture...boom!). "Draw-throughs' are a thing of the past, too many drawbacks in the design.

Lalo is correct that the carb venting (and preferably the shafts as well) need to be sealed to sense the increased air pressure. On DCOEs, it is pretty easy, others may not be. The fuel pressure also must rise to meet the increased boost (i.e. baseline fuel @ 4psi and raises 1psi for every boost psi) or the boost will push the fuel out of the bowl and into the tank! Other than that, the carbs are relatively similar to the normally aspirated version. They just sense more air flowing through them, thus more fuel....

A drawback to 'blow-through' carbs is that a 'blow off valve' must be used prior to the carb or your idle jets will be pressurized (and way rich) when you close the throttle at boost. Blow off valves are pretty cheap and easy to come by, but its amazing how many kits don't include this item.

All-in-all I would suggest a modified FI system, with a rising-rate fuel regulator and a compressor by-pass valve (similar to a blow-off valve) for a street engine.

In case you haven't guessed, yes, I have done A LOT of research on this for my turbo Scorpion project. Eric, I would be interested in see this X sometime. It looks similar to one that a friend had in high school (his promply blew up!).

There are MANY other things to consider when strapping on a turbo, I've just hinted at a few.........<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
