On the plus side, as I mentioned last week, the car is now running... on the negative side, it is not making much power. Any ideas? He has already fiddled with the ignition timing, and it didn't help any. If there some other quirky Fiat thing that I can alert him to?

This is an 83, right?
So what are the symptoms?
Did you drive it in the present state of low power?
Did it have more power before? I can't remember the history of your car.
Is the power low compared to other X1/9s, or is this just a genereal complaint that your car is slow? X1/9s in stock trim aren't all that fast.

If it really is slower than it should be, some basic troubleshooting is in order. Compression test, check iginition timing, check that throttle is really all the way open when you floor the pedal, etc.

But it really depends on the other symptoms, does it run rough, does it miss, run on 3 cylinders, does it not want to rev, etc.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Yes, it is an 83. It is idiling fine now (thanks to a new ignition coil), hitting on all cylinders, and the compression is good + - less than 5 lbs on all cylinders.

I did take it out for a spin... the power is MUCH lower than it was before... itjust sort of chugs along, but smooths out under idle. The throttle is opening all the way. My mechanic tinkered with with ignition timing, and says it is within the range it should be (I have to trust him on this one - I don't know how to do that). It acts almost like the fuel lines or filter are blocked, but it is getting plenty (too much?) gas. That's why I am so puzzled... I am starting to think it is a wierd electrical gremlin rather than a mechanical problem.

I am so damn frustrated with this car! It has been gone for a month now, and the end isn't in sight!

It happen once to me before, the advantage is that is fairly easy to check.
Remove the catalytic cvtr from the car (both flanges) and even if it makes A LOT OF NOISE, you can go around the block at least once, you should know right away.

Or a clogged fuel filter?

I forgot to ask you, Have you washed the engine compartment lately?

If so, the connector to the ECU (behind the spare) may have moisture.
It idles perfectly, but when you apply power (or tried to)the engine will not develop any power and starts misfiring, and once you release the gas pedal returns to idle and runs just fine (only at idle)

Everytime I wash the engine it happens to me, and the solution is to disconnect the connector, and I dry it with my wife's hair dryer

When I first got my '80 it was having some very strange lack of power, similar symptoms except that it would also cut out completely once in a while too. Turns out the plug on the ECU was not pushed on all the way, it was just sort of sitting on top of the connectors - which means poor (and sometimes no) contacts. When I checked the plug and put it on securely the problem vanished. Worth a look anyway. -Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Remove the tire and you will see a "black box" mounted to the wall in there. There is a large oblong wiring harness plugged into the top of the box. That's the plug we mean.

Poke around and let us know what you find. Also, can you provide any more specific details on the symptoms? It idles well you say, but craps out when you try to accelerate? -Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

possible cause for lack of power, also if the fuel pump does not produce the required pressure, when you open the gas the engine demands more fuel, but with low fuel pressure you won't get anywhere (a clogged fuel filter will have similar effect)

When this who thing started (actually, a month ago today) the first thing done was to replace the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator. So, I know it isn't these... see my response to Mac for some other ideas...

More info.. .hmmm, well he called me today and filled me in on some more of the problem...

As I said before, it idles fine, but sort of stutters and stammers when the car is put in gear. Beyond that, I don't know what else to tell you. Well, maybe this - if he leaves it running, it eventually stalls... he noted that it doesn't stall until the fan kicks on (a short maybe?) I'll have him Check the connections on the ecu, and if that doesn't help, we talked today about having him hardwire the fan to the battery and put in a switch so I turn it on manually, avoiding the ECU and any regulators and relays that might be in line. Keep your fingers crossed for me... I am almost at the end of my rope here! :)

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Sounds like the Air Flow Meter may not be doing it's job. Check to see if the flap moves freely with only a 'bouncy' resistance. Any sticky spots could cause what you're experiencing.

In my experience FI fuel pumps either work or don't work. It's not the problem.

Check for massive vacuum leaks. The big rubber hose between the AFM and intake plenum could have a tear where the crank and fast idle hoses enter on the underside.

I've got a lot more ideas as to what could be causing your problem, if the above doesn't solve it I'll offer more.
