While removing the centre console on my 1980 Bertone, I found this VDO unit. It doesn't seem to be mentionned in the Shop Manual I consulted. Anyone know what it is?

Yes, that's the thing that lights up the light that reminds you to change the O2 sensor. Most folks just chuck it.

Since you won’t be needing it, you can harvest the two plastic connectors to use in doing the removable wiper relay modification.

When you harvest the connector from the car side ensure the wires are properly terminated so they don’t short out.
