What did you do to your X1/9 today ?

I put plates on my new to me 1980 and took my wife out for her first drive in an X1/9... and she loved it. The car is cosmetically a little rough, but there's potential.

Put in the new speedo cable, de-cluttered frunk just a bit from the counter, Looks nice.

The strain relief boot in the frunk is destroyed from age and wear, anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Hey Angelo. Welcome back to the forum and X1/9 ownership.

You likely don't remember me.....but I recall meeting you many years ago.....at least 10 or 12.......You kindly sold me some nice bits for my X.

Angelo had a very highly modified X he used for autocross. With a twincam and tranny from a Lancia Beta if I recall.

If you are still in Brampton I'm pretty close to you. If I can be of any assistance dont hesitate to reach out.

And hey...I'm trying to identify that "other" nice car in your garage. Maybe....an Alfetta GT or GTV6 ?? Looks quite tasty.....

Doug

Thanks Doug, didn't think I'd ever get back into an X again but here I am. Vaguely remember you, but I'm better with faces. Yes, GTV6. Life's gone in every direction since then, but I'm back. I'll reach out to you this winter.

Alternator acting up: intermittent charging. Turns out the slip rings were brownish color. Cleaned with very thin sanding paper and reassembled. Now charging normally. While at it, I fabricated a heat shield to protect the alternator from the nearby header.

We need to get ours and mine out together on track! Maybe Tamworth next year? Or Jag Club.

A big weekend, after enjoying a nice vacation all week, got to work on the car Friday and Saturday. Had alignment completed. Did some final timing adjustments, wrapped up minor electrical issue and bleed the brakes for the one hundredth time. I was ready to actually drive the car.

It was a joyous event, car drove well and I was hammer around town. During the drive a few issue came up.

- The brakes are still not what I would expect, this is really wearing me down as I have tried everything.
- I have a clunk in the passengers side rear strut, should be easy enough to fix.
- May have a head gasket leak, going to test this week.

My objective is to drive through a tank of gas before winter.

Discovered wiring damage hidden in the engine bay - harness with the alternator wiring at one time had shorted to ground on an exposed firewall stud. P.O. had cut out a foot of burned copper and and twisted in new copper for each wire. He twisted 8 gauge wires together and then taped it. Ugh. Pulling it all back to the tunnel to inspect.

I need to pull all old copper from the removed smog gear anyway so it'll be cleaner.

Have you pulled apart the rear caliper that does not have the scribe line to show correct piston orientation?
Not at this point, what I did do was reverse the pistons alignment 180. If this was the issue the rotation should have cleared it up. No such luck. I also raised the brake reservoir in case I had any air bubbles trapped in the feeder lines. I need to order parts today and was going to talk to Matt at MWB to see if he can shed any light on this piston as he does sell replacement pistons.

Good idea and should have worked. Unless that piston is also missing the internal feature that the missing line indicates :)

Exactly what I was thinking as well, was hoping Matt could shed some light on this as he sell replacement pistons but as luck would have it this is his race week. so have to wait to next week. I could pull it apart but my car time is limited.

3D printed my first small parts today. Thread protector caps, I need a lot of them.
It took a while to get the bed leveled and adjust the details.

The white is from the PLA sample that came with the printer, the black is TPU - not rubber but akin to flexible plastic. There is a standard print layer mode of 0.2mm and high quality mode of 0.12mm.
0.12mm is really nice.

Still waiting on my black PLA to arrive. Can't quite get the focus right.

This is cool.

Picked up my Speedlines from being refurbished and to say I’m delighted with the results is an understatement.
Personally I don’t think the original grey colour gives enough contrast between the CNC cut surface and the painted surface so I chose Santorini Black (Land Rover) which has a fine multicoloured mica.

Was screwing around on the front of the car (Painter decided he needed to completely disassemble the entire headlamp/motor system). Anyhow, while I was at it...
Had always thought of this mod, just never got around to it. Thinking it may actually get some lift pressure out of the headlamp buckets at speed. And I think it is kinda cool. Reality is, it probably does/is neither. Anyhow, a little paint touch up, there ya go.
