but i have noticed that there is a low
"whirring" sound that begins around 60mph or so.
the sound seems to come from the right rear.
it is not very loud, but it varies.
what does a bad wheel bearing sound like?
this sound is relatively low-pitched.
almost like differential noise on coast-down...
any ideas?

I had a local machine shop build me a tool for it ($25). Then, with a good attempt at cleaning up the staked threads and the custom tool I was able to remove and reuse the nut. Had the local NAPA do the pressing for me.
The tool they made out of two squares of 2" stock welded on top of each other 90 degrees apart via a pair of drilled holes. The resulting 8 points were ground to engage the ring nuts slightly tapered indents perfectly. Finally, they punched a 1/2" hole in the center for a ratchet. I had already cleaned up the staked threads, so when they went to try out their work the ring nut came out first try.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Next time, try swerving left and right. If it goes away one way and gets worse the other way, it is the wheel brg.
Personally, I have had bad luck diagnosing which side brg is bad. Some people try to tell from the swerve test, but since each brg has two halves, the noise will be caused depending on which half is bad.

That is what I did with mine, and the driver side had a rumble that the passenger side didn't. I didn't feel any play on either side. What I did was just buy the whole knuckle from a junkyard, because I didn't want to deal with bearings. Still going good. Here is the proceedure as best as I recall. I'm going to skip the obvious (jack up car, etc):
Remove the wheel, brake caliper, caliper assembly, and backing plate.
Using pickleforks, undo the two balljoints (remove the nuts first, of course!).
Unstake the axle nut as best you can and remove it with an air impact.
Remove the two bolts through the strut.
This should leave the knuckle free to move and with the right motion you should be able to slide the axle out of the hub as you remove the knuckle. You shouldn't need to remove the CV, I didn't. Books say you have to, but there was plenty of play to work the still-attached axle out of the hub.
Once the knuckle is out, the hub needs to be pressed out.
Once the hub is out of the knuckle, you should be able to see the ring nut. It's a large brass ring with threads on the outside and 8 indentations inside. It's staked in (threads bashed next to a cutout) so you need to clean those up with a sharp screwdriver or chisel best you can. Then, you need a tool to engage the indentations and unscrew it. BTW - it's a $28 nut, so it's worth a little time to preserve!
If you get the ring nut out, then it's a simple matter to have the old bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in. Then, using the fancy tool you need to retorque the ringnut to 43 footpounds, restake the threads, and reassemble things. Don't forget to also restake the axle nut. Getting the nuts started on the balljoints can be a little fun but not hard. The greased joint tends to want to spin easier than the nylock nut wants to move up the threads. You need to push the joint into the knuckle while turning the nut to stop it until it starts to snug itself in there.

i am still a bit stumped on this one.
i am pretty sure the left rear wheel bearing is
the culprit, here.
symptoms are:
low pitched whirring once i go over 40mph or so.
seems to resonate at about 55mph.
goes away when i turn hard to the right.
other observations:
persists even during coasting (not engine RPM
related)
i performed the "wiggle" test mentioned above.
no evidence of play (on all 4 wheels).
i also spun the wheels.
i even stripped the wheels down to he hub.
couldn't detect any rumble (other than the working
of the CV joints).
perhaps this was masking a problem, but i stopped there, because i found something else:
i noticed that the center-cup (what is the right term?) on top of the strut was in contact with
the car body.
for some reason, the rubber bushing is not keeping
the strut shaft centered in the shock tower hole.
on the left side, the center cup/washer was actually under the bodywork.
so i though that might be resonating thru the chassis and causing the noise problem.
i was able to wedge a piece of thick cloth between the cup and body-work to try to isolate it.
it takes the bumps a little better (i was wondering why it thumped so hard), but the
whirring is just as bad.
so now i have two problems to fix... ;(
i guess i will have to disconnect the CV tomorrow
and re-spin.
hey: is there any chance the CV is making this noise?
or maybe the transmission/diff?

2) Wait until Oregon 2001 in Ashland and let someone convince you "the shortest path back is past the covered bridge and down the gravel road". That is all it took to finish off my front bearing..
Your stut mounts are worn out, Mike M. says they are only $20 each to replace. I really need to do that on mine, they have the same problem. Doubt it's your noise though. Ever think it might just be your tires making the noise?
BTW - the "rumble" is pretty subtle, it's more of a "listen carefully and feel the hub as it turns compared to the other side". As loud as mine was on the road, I'd have never changed the bearing if I hadn't compared it with the other side and realized the other side felt and sounded better. Popping the calipers off might help locate it easier. If I recall, it was more obvious holding the hub and rotating it back and forth than just spinning the wheel fast and listening - doing that just got the tranny and CVs making too much noise of their own.

After removing the bearing and checking everything to find out all was fine, a mechanic checked my tires and noted they were "cupped" from lack of rotating. Just run your hand back and forth across the tread and feel for places where the tread angles up at slight angles from the plane of the tire. Some will go up toward the front, some to the back. The more roughness you feel, the worse the cupping. Anything that snags you hand a little is a sign of road noise.
I change my tires and fixed the problem. Actually, I thought I'd lost my hearing (due to the lack of noise I'd gotten used to). You can check this out without a tire purchase by just rotating the tires from front to back. However, new tires should make the noise disappear. the sound seems to come from the right rear.
it is not very loud, but it varies.
what does a bad wheel bearing sound like?
this sound is relatively low-pitched.
almost like differential noise on coast-down...

I had a local machine shop build me a tool for it ($25). Then, with a good attempt at cleaning up the staked threads and the custom tool I was able to remove and reuse the nut. Had the local NAPA do the pressing for me.
The tool they made out of two squares of 2" stock welded on top of each other 90 degrees apart via a pair of drilled holes. The resulting 8 points were ground to engage the ring nuts slightly tapered indents perfectly. Finally, they punched a 1/2" hole in the center for a ratchet. I had already cleaned up the staked threads, so when they went to try out their work the ring nut came out first try.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Next time, try swerving left and right. If it goes away one way and gets worse the other way, it is the wheel brg.
Personally, I have had bad luck diagnosing which side brg is bad. Some people try to tell from the swerve test, but since each brg has two halves, the noise will be caused depending on which half is bad.

That is what I did with mine, and the driver side had a rumble that the passenger side didn't. I didn't feel any play on either side. it must be a wheel bearing.
it does seem to be coming from the passenger side rear.
and it sometimes goes away in corners
(but not particular about direction).
i jacked her up last weekend to rock & spin the wheels as you guys suggested,
but got distracted by the exhaust holding on by one bolt.
dug up 3 more bolts and fixed that.
also noticed that the exhaust bracket to the tranny is beginning to crack !?!
wishful thinking made me want to believe that
the exhaust was making the noise.
plus, the kids had just woken up, so i didn't
pursue any further.
sounds like a crappy job to replace the bearings, huh?

What I did was just buy the whole knuckle from a junkyard, because I didn't want to deal with bearings. Still going good. I think and X knuckle wouldn't be that hard to find.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Not that bad with airtools. The only real hassle is finding/building the tool for the ring nut. I wouldn't go with a used part since you're going to have to do 90% of the work anyway.
Here is the proceedure as best as I recall. I'm going to skip the obvious (jack up car, etc):
Remove the wheel, brake caliper, caliper assembly, and backing plate.
Using pickleforks, undo the two balljoints (remove the nuts first, of course!).
Unstake the axle nut as best you can and remove it with an air impact.
Remove the two bolts through the strut.
This should leave the knuckle free to move and with the right motion you should be able to slide the axle out of the hub as you remove the knuckle. You shouldn't need to remove the CV, I didn't. Books say you have to, but there was plenty of play to work the still-attached axle out of the hub.
Once the knuckle is out, the hub needs to be pressed out.
Once the hub is out of the knuckle, you should be able to see the ring nut. It's a large brass ring with threads on the outside and 8 indentations inside. It's staked in (threads bashed next to a cutout) so you need to clean those up with a sharp screwdriver or chisel best you can. Then, you need a tool to engage the indentations and unscrew it. BTW - it's a $28 nut, so it's worth a little time to preserve!
If you get the ring nut out, then it's a simple matter to have the old bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in. Then, using the fancy tool you need to retorque the ringnut to 43 footpounds, restake the threads, and reassemble things. Don't forget to also restake the axle nut. Getting the nuts started on the balljoints can be a little fun but not hard. The greased joint tends to want to spin easier than the nylock nut wants to move up the threads. You need to push the joint into the knuckle while turning the nut to stop it until it starts to snug itself in there.

i am still a bit stumped on this one.
i am pretty sure the left rear wheel bearing is
the culprit, here.
symptoms are:
low pitched whirring once i go over 40mph or so.
seems to resonate at about 55mph.
goes away when i turn hard to the right.
other observations:
persists even during coasting (not engine RPM
related)
i performed the "wiggle" test mentioned above.
no evidence of play (on all 4 wheels).
i also spun the wheels.
i even stripped the wheels down to he hub.
couldn't detect any rumble (other than the working
of the CV joints).
perhaps this was masking a problem, but i stopped there, because i found something else:
i noticed that the center-cup (what is the right term?) on top of the strut was in contact with
the car body.
for some reason, the rubber bushing is not keeping
the strut shaft centered in the shock tower hole.
on the left side, the center cup/washer was actually under the bodywork.
so i though that might be resonating thru the chassis and causing the noise problem.
i was able to wedge a piece of thick cloth between the cup and body-work to try to isolate it.
it takes the bumps a little better (i was wondering why it thumped so hard), but the
whirring is just as bad.
so now i have two problems to fix... ;(
i guess i will have to disconnect the CV tomorrow
and re-spin.
hey: is there any chance the CV is making this noise?
or maybe the transmission/diff?

2) Wait until Oregon 2001 in Ashland and let someone convince you "the shortest path back is past the covered bridge and down the gravel road". That is all it took to finish off my front bearing..
Your stut mounts are worn out, Mike M. says they are only $20 each to replace. I really need to do that on mine, they have the same problem. Doubt it's your noise though. Ever think it might just be your tires making the noise?
BTW - the "rumble" is pretty subtle, it's more of a "listen carefully and feel the hub as it turns compared to the other side". As loud as mine was on the road, I'd have never changed the bearing if I hadn't compared it with the other side and realized the other side felt and sounded better. Popping the calipers off might help locate it easier. If I recall, it was more obvious holding the hub and rotating it back and forth than just spinning the wheel fast and listening - doing that just got the tranny and CVs making too much noise of their own.

After removing the bearing and checking everything to find out all was fine, a mechanic checked my tires and noted they were "cupped" from lack of rotating. Just run your hand back and forth across the tread and feel for places where the tread angles up at slight angles from the plane of the tire. Some will go up toward the front, some to the back. The more roughness you feel, the worse the cupping. Anything that snags you hand a little is a sign of road noise.
I change my tires and fixed the problem. Actually, I thought I'd lost my hearing (due to the lack of noise I'd gotten used to). You can check this out without a tire purchase by just rotating the tires from front to back. However, new tires should make the noise disappear.
