I've got the rusty rear quarters cut of the car, and I have rough cut patches.... there is a GIANT professional spotwelder borrowed from a friend...

I'll do the final shaping and fitting tommorrow, and weld on Sunday. If all goes well, a skim coat of filler is all that will be needed... then it will be shot with black epoxy primer.

I'll wait until spring to do the final paint. My shop has radiant heat from pipes in the floor, so it is hard to get it above 50 degrees... at that temperature the paint will take longer to dry, which increases the risks of dust infiltrating the paint, runs and sags, etc... I'll wait for a nice 70 degree day in the spring for final paint.

Need to think about that headlight mod - I like the way it looks, and if I can find sufficient parts, I'll probably do that... my pop ups have given me nothing but trouble (they are still about 1/8 out of sync with each other...).

So, wish me luck!

Actually more skill and time than luck though, right ? Sounds like an involving endeavor for the weekend. Mine ?

Since I'm gonna run the stock fuel tank and everything is exposed right now....It's time to convert to a locking cap system. As you know there is not a locking fuel cap available for these X 's. It would take a bunch to modify the existing cap to make it locking...so....time to scout for a conventional filler neck that will accept a locking cap, then plumb it into the tank neck. Probably remove the existing hanger and reweld it on a new neck. This seems the easiest route but will explore more options of conversion tomorrow. Will post the results on this site for for how to convert to the new system if anyone is interested. Out for now, lezesig '79 X 1/9<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Thanks a bunch for the offer Warren ! Much appreciated. It appears you tangled with this conversion then also. The assembly was designed pretty good....but I came up with a better one I think. Conversion is now complete pending installation tomorrow. I'll post more on the subject after installation.

On a different subject - I'm with you on the serpentine type heating through flooring. They blast out conductive/radiant heat for sure. At least the ones I've stood on. Might be a question on the insulation, drafting, flow ??

From beltline height to bottom, from the wheel arch (very difficult to fabricate) to the attachment point for the rear grille.

I stil need to do a smaller piece (about 4inches square) above the tailpipe.

I also welded the holes for the bumper trim shut.

She's still in need of grinding, and a skimcoat of "plastic surgery", as well as a layer or two of fibreglass to support the new floor in the side pods of the rear trunk.

Major, major work... probably a lot more than I needed to do, but I never want to have to do it again!
