Working on the House....

Got the wood for the exterior window molding, sill & drip cap & got it all cut installed & caulked & first coat before it got cold.

Rest of siding, porch door frame/trim, & other windows/trim will be dealt with starting next spring

Broken shingles will be replaced, just not relishing that part of the job.

Replaced the two cracked lower shingles today, and started with the house paint.

These have started appearing in the yard... it can be a challenge keeping the cats from 'playing' with them...

I've got thousands of them. I'm glad I do, they help keep the bugs off of my pepper plants😀. This one laid an egg sack on this cayenne plant. I'm looking forward to having even more of them hanging around.

Started with childhood memories I was drawing on whilst working on my Bachelor's Thesis (Parsons School of Design), and being just a little obsessive/compulsive, once I started gathering examples, I went a little overboard...

I take them with me when we travel...

I really enjoyed that show. JK Simmons did a really fine job. Are you referring to Harry Lloyd or Guy Burnet? I think there were quite a few British actors in that.

Back to working on the house this past week. pulled the siding off that I could reach on a ladder., primed the lower area & started getting some paint on it. Stripped all the **** from around the door, and pulled back the broken tiles I have to replace

New tiles & new 5/4 wood around the door opening, all caulked & primed

Started putting up the scaffolding. Took all weekend.

Had to make an extra brace to triangulate the support on this side. Did get all the upper siding removed. Have to strip the crap off the upper windows, and figure out how bad the window casings are. The downstairs ones need everything removed back to the rough opening, and new windows, new wood molding (casing?)

In the midst of all the work, the fridge died. Only 5 years old, but its a Kenmore & Sears doesn't exist anymore - not around here anyway.

Looking for a new one, we found that like cars, all the new ones are larger, and getting a smaller one is a problem. We did finally find one listed with PC Rischards (not in showroom to look at in the flesh...) that had the dimensions we required - but, it seems they don't actually mean much - this fridge was supposed to be 68" tall - apparently doors don't count as part of the height measurement..

So, we had to lift the center cabinet....

.... and move the outlet & water supply behind it to the side, as the new fridge depth measurement is also off....

good as it's gonna get.

Also got both stairwell windows in before the rain began on Friday. Got the exterior trim done on the upper window, back caulked all the wood filler strips I needed to get the correct offset for the outer 5/4 x 6 pine trim moldings.

Had to add new new true 2x4 for the rough openings. After that, we worked on the interior trim. Had to add extension jambs & support due to the depth of the lath & plaster walls

Used clear pine from a small local lumber yard, still has a number of knots, better than the box store lumber though

Started staining the window and trim

Gotta love a person who can use the word whilst in general correspondence.

Carpentry is good too…

I thought 'clear' was supposed to mean without knots? I buy flat grain, clear Douglas Fir for most of my house projects... We get the flat grain because we like the crazy tiger stripe grain, plus it's what my whole house is made of anyway. But the clear designation should mean free of knots...

Yeah - I guess they use the term loosely in this part of the country? All the 'clear' lumber has some knots

Over 90 today - hard to work in this temp

I got the lower window surround cut back 6" on each side, cleaned up, backed caulked everything & got the moldings, sill, cap/drip cap done, and we got some more paint on the siding. That took all day

The Pella's for the upper rear window (same for other side of the house won't be ready for pickup until 3rd week of June, so not touching the casings on that until I have them in hand

Have to cut the the siding back 5.5" all the way up to the gable for the vertical trim

PXL_20210605_234834360.jpg

PVC on the deck is for the vertical trim on the front edge of the house up to the gable trim

PXL_20210605_234857679.jpg

Plugging away at this - got the siding cut back & vertical trim installed for this side of the house. Removed & replaced a few broken tiles

Have to do more priming/painting, finnish the external trim on the middle upper window. Soffet retaining channel needs a new securing rail against the siding. Not looking forward to any of the work up under the eaves.

Really slow going on the house front - still haven't finished the south side. Windows finally came for the Southwest & Northwest ends of the house - so Ann & I got the old one out, the rough framing taken care of, the new window in, and plaster work to repair the damaged lathe/plaster from the crappy window install.

needs sanding, spackle skim coat, prime & paint, then trim installed & window stained.

PXL_20210705_173617302.jpg

We wrapped up the south side a couple weeks ago - just a couple minor things to finish up

PXL_20210808_215226312.jpg

Today we finally started pulling the vinyl off the North (and final) side

At this point, not surprised at the crap that went on when this siding was done - they must have installed the small kitchen window then - instead of properly filling the cavity & framing the smaller window, they slapped some sheathing on it & set the window in it, then used foam to fill in the gap...
