WTB-1986 X1/9 Alternator with A/C

Tavalin

Florida Mike (again)
Need to purchase an alternator for a 1986 X1/9 with A/C. I have not been able to find one at MWB but I have only checked a few times recently.
The original is in the car now and is not got jealous of all the other repairs I have recently done.

It just so happens that I am parting out an ‘86. I have no idea if the alternator works or not or how soon I can get to it but let me know if you are interested.

Mike, also consider having your existing one rebuilt. See if there are any automotive electrical rebuilding specialist shops in your area. It is less expensive and often better quality than a new one. And if you wanted (or needed) to, they can make it have a higher output (amps) to help supply any added electrical loads (cooling fans, etc).

Dr Jeff,
I have looked around in my area but every shop I went to either said they didn’t do rebuilds anymore or that stopped for awhile during the COVID-19 issues.
I have one more shop to look into but my friend said they only take orders from shops.
:(

Rodger,
Thank you. I am still looking. I will let you know soon.
Thanks,
Mike

Wow, I have learned so much from you guys!!!
I will review the posts and maybe try to do it myself.
Then when I fail purchase one. :)

I think I have purchased an alternator, 14v 70amp with no voltage regulator.
Now, I am going to search for the Bosch voltage regulator.
If someone has one or knows someone, please let me know.
I am going to now take my time and find a good alternator rebuild shop and new voltage regulator for the original alternator as well.

Send it to me, and I will have Ralph fix it.
Chris,
Would you know about how much?
Also, your shipping address. I am going to look one more week then I will send to you if I have no luck finding someone locally.
Thanks,
Mike

Given how ridiculously high the current shipping rates have gone, not to mention the extremely poor service from the shippers these days, unfortunately it might not be worth it to send your old unit to be rebuilt compared to a new one. But see what what you can find out - hopefully it won't be too bad.

Purchased an alternator from someone here... thank you Erwin!!! Received and looks great. Purchased a voltage regulator from an Amazon company in Florida and the part was supposed to have been made in Spain. Oh well, it is made in Taiwan. As long as I didn’t give anything to China (figurative).
Then I had to have an education on how the darn regulator went into the alternator. I couldn’t get it to fit so I went online to MWB and purchased another one thinking I purchased the wrong part. Then my wife went over and the darn thing slid right in...lol. She should be a mechanic. So smart...
So now I will have a new one when I have the original alternator rebuilt so nothing lost.
Going to have a busy weekend with oil changes for two cars and the alternator changeout.
Sorry I haven’t gotten the voltage readings but I will take them before and after the change out.
If anyone is coming out this way, please stop by and talk me off the cliff (again)...:) Or have a beer (help!!!).
Will post pics and readings later.
Mike
