wtb dual dcnf air filter box

was going to make one, but time time time...anyways looking to source an enclosed type filter box with hose or snorkel type attachment tube, kinda like stock, but for dual dcnfs...I have seen some here have something similar...even the source for parts to build my own would be helpful...Thx!!
 
yeah, I had seen the fiberglass one, was thinking about it, but the snorkel- wrong way ...guess I'm gonna have to visit my sheet metal guy- f*** those prices, lol. Wanted a filter on top, but thinking about it, those cold air filters all the ricers are using are universal size, no? so just need an enclosed box, with a tube on the side- thanks guys for the suggestions

TWM sells a generic air box like that for it's throttle bodies.
So who be TWM? sorry I don't know that source...
 
Another issue...now I'm wondering if I'm going to have to get a 1500 engine cover...So far this has been quite an adventure...I spent all late afternoon yesterday cursing aftermarket parts.....seems the casting for my intake, and the way my header is made do not jive...nothing a flat file, a grinder, and a dremel couldn't handle....but I hate that chit- Don't grind off too much!!!! I have finally got to the point where I'm going to have to take off the header for sure, as I don't want to keep removing material from the intake...
 
The two boxes linked above are the only two available that are made for the X (or the Ritmo/Strada in the first case).
The first one is a fiberglass replica of a design sold by german company Hoermann in the 80s.
On the original, only the lid was fiberglass, the bottom was metal.
The filter element hasn‘t been available for ever. I even talked to Purolator, who made the original.

Both of the filter boxes should fit under the 1300 engine lid.
Unfortunately, none of the universal designs will.

Edit: just remembered that Pipercross makes has a solution as well.

yeah, f it, gonna make a box...I know a sheet metal guy that has done the pipe pan underneath, and the trunk pan- both in stainless for dirt...this will be a bit more complicated, but I'm sure he can handle it. Problem is still the filter to use, so I'll just do a remote filter box...thx for all the suggestions

You could use a SBC valve cover to fab one up, or use one to make a mold?
Or, you could look for one of these in your local Pick-a-Part...You could probably adapt one of the air intake boxes to work.

You could even choose which side to position the inlet on. And those trumpets!
 
I made an airbox for the dual IDFs on my spider last century (funny how that sounds impressive). I found that the air filter box from an 80s or 70s vintage Ford Escort with a carb was amazing, light aluminum with nice spring loaded clasps. Had to cut the base out to make my own but so what. Air filter would not be hard to get. Sorry for the picture quality, I took pictures of the photos in my album.

I think they were painted black but depainted and polished they were really nice. Finding such am Escort in the junk yard might be a challenge.

Well nothing on the web...hmmm One question I ponder is, how big of an inlet hose would be required? I presently have a 3" tube, which I know is oversized for a single carb... also wonder how much room on top of the air horns...more research and reading I really want a closed box because my engine cover is opened up with louvers removed, and never know if you might end up in the rain
 
I actually have a copy of the IDF article I did for the FLU newsletter (yes, before the internet we had a paper newsletter). Anyway all I mentioned in the article was making the filter housing from one off an "early" Escort. Have no idea what year that would be but can't be hard to find. Again, it was the filter for a single carb. You would have to have access to a junk yard that never gets rid of their cars from the 70s and 80s. I seriously doubt one would show up on eBay.

I did some research on this.
„Internet wisdom“ 35-40mm
Pipercross claims only 19mm as minimum.
 
I'd be very interested in any economical solutions you find as well. I've been looking for a while and there's some great looking aftermarket stuff, but they all seem extremely overpriced.
 
so I went to visit my sheet metal guy...Dude is awesome, he actually helped me figure out a better way figure out how to plumb the air inlet, and even where to get some hardware to buckle it together...I'll post pics when I get it. Only 100 bucks for a stainless inlet box
 
The Passani Weber book indicates the inner top surface of the air cleaner should be spaced above the top of air horn by a distance equal to the diameter of the venturi. Most of my experience is with IDFs and guys who use the stock air horns and use low sport filters are really choking off their carbs. Unfortunately no one really makes a proper height sport filter to fit under the hood of a spider, I usually use shorter aftermarket air horns or cut down the stock ones. So how much height is there under either type of X engine cover for air filters on DCNFs?
 
Ah! That‘s where the 35-40 mm come from. :)

In short, under the 1300 cover, there is enough room to fit a 1,5L with flat style DCNF w/o air horns but with filters of adequate height.
There really can‘t be made enough room to fit the flat style carbs, the air horns (42mm tall) and a filter with adequate clearance.

The typical low K&Ns have a 44mm tall element.
