I noticed the car is a bit more sluggish in accelerating that at sea level. Doesn't the fuel injection adjust for air pressure? I have a 1981 X1/9 with the Bosch FI.

While it's true that the ECU will attempt to compensate for altitude, it can not do anything about the fact that your engine does not get as much oxygen at high altitudes. Less oxygen = less power! That's why most hill climb cars use forced induction...<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

"better" gas won't help unfortunately.
You would need higher octane gas if you increased your compression ratio as you said.

Like John says, the air just contains less oxygen up where you live.

I remember that the earlier FI cars had a small square thing, right on top of the ECU (on the top right side next to the harness connector), this small thing has two exposed wires that are supposed to be plugged with each other if you are opperating your car above certain altitudes (this is according to the oparation;s manual)
I hope your car has this "altitude compensator"

I got all excited and ran outside to my car looking for the wires, but they weren't there. What "operations manual" do you have? I have the shop manual, the Haynes book, and the Chilton book. In addition to the ECU, there's a small aluminum square thing that looks like a relay but has more wires coming out of it, and a rectangleblack plastic thing that has even more wiring comeing out of it. Thanks for your suggestion!

I checked the shop repair manual (I got it from IAP about ten years ago)

On the section "Fuel Injection System" 102.26
It says; "Connect the two small conectors on the ECU harness together, then set the idle speed"

And the picture shows that this wires are at the end of the wire harness, right before the connector plug than conects the harnes to the ECU.

However, my X is a '86 model and does not have the two small conectors hanging from the harness.
