The X1/9 was an impulse buy- it looked great, right price, right potential. No i am left with the job of turning it into the car i want ( Hell, the job of turning it into a roadworthy car!).
My questions are thus:
One- does anyone have any suggestions for cost effecient methods for improving steering response/ suspension? and
Two- I have a real itchin' desire to put a VW 2.0 liter ( or 1.8, 10 hp diff. lower wieght) and close ratio gearbox. (yeah, i got the idea from this forum) does anyone have any idea how i would go about doing this??
Thanks in advance, i need some help. My Nissan sentra isn't cool enough anymore. . .<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Matt,

Assuming the car has a decent set of wheels and tires and the suspension is in good shape (that is; ball joints, tie rod ends and control arm bushings are all good) then a good starting point would be a set of struts and springs and the addition of a front bar. KYB makes a decent strut and you can cut a coil from the front springs and half a coil from the rear. Another trick is to swap out the front springs for another set of rears with a coil removed. Shorter and stiffer springs may still be available from some suppliers, I haven't checked in a while. Addco makes a decent front bar for the car. There are a couple of others out there, but I don't recommend them. These simple mods will tighen the car up nicely without making it un-streetable.

As for the VW motor swap, I am not much of a motor swap advocate. The SOHC motor is a very nice unit and can be made to produce plenty of power. Building one up would probably be a lot cheaper and easier than trying to drop in the VW.

I've never run bars on a car with stock springs. Don't think I would want to. Too much understeer already! My DSP car was oversteering, so I added the front bar to balance it out.

I'm not familiar with the bars from Vick's or IAP, but it wouldn't surprise me if they are Addco.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I am currently running with FAZA Stage II springs all the way around.

I remember that when I purchased the springs, Al Cosentino mentioned that I will not need the sway bars any more.

Now, ten years latter, after reading your post I will like to ask you what kind of improvement I could expect by adding a front bar, or do you recommend a rear as well?

With the Stage II springs I know that the car is very sensitive to throttle inputs while driving hard on the rain (specially if you lift the throttle on tight turns!)

In addition to the springs, my car has also the Konis and the AVS Intermediate, I really like the handling (while not the jumping), and I would like to get less body roll if possible.

Your comments will be appreciated. Thank you,

Gilles

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hiya Matt. The suspension mods Steve H described are exactly what I did on BlackX, except no front bar. If you've looked at my webpage, you can see it does have some bodyroll, but the lowering creates some de-camber to help keep the tire contact patch reasonably parallel to the ground. And as Steve says, it still rides pretty nicely.

Motor swaps are great benchracing material, but the reality is that it is a huge undertaking. That's fine if you have time, talent, facilities, and equipment, but if you want to get it on the road, pick the path of least resistance. I made a few simple mods for under $500 to a single carb 1500 and according to the Ulix SOP dyno, have about 90HP.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->If you have the option of ditching all those power sucking extras that come in the form of emissions control you should be able to get about 100bhp from the motor without messing with the internals and just tweaking the external performance bits (carb, filters, pump and exhaust). If you can get twin-carbs you could probably add another 10-15bhp on, but you'd need to consider a new camshaft to help it along.

110bhp from a relatively stock 1500 that is getting on for 20 years old makes for quite a nice level that should make the alternative engines look quite lame! Better still is that it will sound much better too and you don't need to mess up the engine bay to do it. If it still isn't quick enough, try losing some weight from the car - there are numerous bits and pieces that can be removed and no-one would notice and it all adds up.

As for the suspension, the stock setup with slight lowering is pretty damn good on the road and makes for an entertaining drive. I'm using Jamex progressive springs on my road car and they are more than adequate for the job (a little disconcerting as they start to allow the body to roll and then stiffen up). The trick is in getting everything working as it should be to start with. Once the tracking is sorted and all the bushes have been checked (and replaced if necessary) you should find that it is more than man-enough without having to mess around (much like the engine bay). When it comes down to it, as a package, the X is pretty good to start with. I would strongly recommend getting it all working stock before you try modifying anything, just so you know what the baseline is. Things like the front bar are not to everyone's liking and since this is your car, it ought to be setup the way you like it.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Julian,

There is no way to get the levels of power you mention out of a US car without going into the engine. The US engine is detuned with lower CR and a lame camshaft. Improving those two areas on a US car makes a big difference.

I very much agree that the car has to be sorted out to top shape first in terms of suspension, brakes etc.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Thanks for the input-- yeah, i thought about it and i think i would rather just tune the engine. BTW i have a 1300cc - i have seen a few websites on tuning options, and i have a some extra intake manifolds and a spare head to toy with, but methinks i need headers and a cam- both of which i will have to buy.
Thanks again- especially for the suspension advice- And i really dig your ride Mike<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
