I had the pleasure of driving a few 150 hp turbos and 180 hp carbed models... and admittedly, like an X1/9, they weren't perfect... but a helluva lot of fun.
What really pissed me off though was that Nader set up the Corvair to fail. Fotos depicting a Ford Falcon entering a corner at 25 mph initially lacked the Corvair approaching from behind at 45 mph and then snapped together with the Falcon slightly leaning and the Corvair outta shape.
Nader was known for his statement that if ya wanna get big, knock the big... A true California Attorney!

From my understanding, the rear suspension was shaped like an X on early models (a pretty flat X, with wheels at the bottom corners) so that the lateral cornering forces would cause the car to raise up. Is this correct?
Also, I never read the other side of the Corvair case. I didn't know the main reason Nader triumphed was because of the stupid invasive actions of GM folk, trying to pry into his personal life and tempt him with hookers. Or that the tests he did were likely rigged, and that the NHTSA found a few years later that he was wrong.
I hated Nader anyway, because I think he's a hipocrite, and despite being having largely democratic ideals, he decided to cost the party the presidency instead of trying to change the party.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The X1/9's rear suspension is a fully indipendent one. A simple Z bar will stop the jacking effect on the Corvair. It is the same on an early Beetle( the ones that formulA VEE'S use.)
I know all about this because I also have a Formula VEE, and I have just redesigned the rear suspension to a ZERO Roll setup.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Up until 1965 Corvair had a swing axle with a single universal or CV joint at the trans... just like a VW... Then they went fully independent with TWO universals (CV's?) per axle, per side... which eliminated the problem altogether.

Last night at a Historic Auto club meeting the entertainment was a promotional movie about three red 1962 Corvairs crossing the Darien Gap, the region between Panama and Columbia. Literally they drove three brand new Corvairs and three support 4WD Chevy trucks through the jungles, cutting trails with machettes and building bridges. All sorts of events were documented on film, including fording rivers, constructing small bridges out of tree trunks, and misjudging the narrow distance between trees. One memorable part was when one truck was being winched up a hill by another truck, and the cable snapped, allowing the first truck to slide backwards into the first of the Corvairs, crushing the grille and hood.
By the end of the trip, all six vehicles were just trashed, with their sides scraped and trim missing. Only one of the Corvairs stll had a single headlight, all others were smashed. Throughout the movie, the narrator kept extolling the virtues of the suspension, transaxle, and engine construction, and how these technical advances allowed the Corvairs to conquer the mighty impassable jungle.
I was left wondering what happened to the Corvairs at the end of the trip. Were they shipped back to the states, or just donated to the local economy?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

When Volvo introduced the 850 in 1995, they optioned the Turbos with a 17" wheel and low profile tires. Within two years, a class action suit was filed by a woman who claimed that she had not been properly warned that damage might occur to the low profile tires or rims from potholes and curbs. What was ridiculous was that Volvo (and new owner Ford) agreed to settle with all 850 purchasers, giving them either $500 cash, or $1000 credit towards a new car or new 16" rims and tires.

Apparently, the crux of the issue was kinda overshadowed by the PRECEDENCE setting introduction of using computer-generated videos.
My daughter states that the Supreme Court remanded the case back to the lower court to be tried all over again after granting the use of the videos... but a verdict was to based upon ALL evidence submitted, not just the videos. (Kinda hard to do when the illustrations appear to make it "clear"... and as said prior, the defence for FIAT contended that the videos assumed "facts" not yet in evidence...)
I asked her to do some more research and I assume the last three numbers 617, 611, 822, and 244 might be the next citation numbers???

I had the pleasure of driving a few 150 hp turbos and 180 hp carbed models... and admittedly, like an X1/9, they weren't perfect... but a helluva lot of fun.
What really pissed me off though was that Nader set up the Corvair to fail. Fotos depicting a Ford Falcon entering a corner at 25 mph initially lacked the Corvair approaching from behind at 45 mph and then snapped together with the Falcon slightly leaning and the Corvair outta shape.
Nader was known for his statement that if ya wanna get big, knock the big... A true California Attorney!

From my understanding, the rear suspension was shaped like an X on early models (a pretty flat X, with wheels at the bottom corners) so that the lateral cornering forces would cause the car to raise up. Is this correct?
Also, I never read the other side of the Corvair case. I didn't know the main reason Nader triumphed was because of the stupid invasive actions of GM folk, trying to pry into his personal life and tempt him with hookers. Or that the tests he did were likely rigged, and that the NHTSA found a few years later that he was wrong.
I hated Nader anyway, because I think he's a hipocrite, and despite being having largely democratic ideals, he decided to cost the party the presidency instead of trying to change the party.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The X1/9's rear suspension is a fully indipendent one. A simple Z bar will stop the jacking effect on the Corvair. It is the same on an early Beetle( the ones that formulA VEE'S use.)
I know all about this because I also have a Formula VEE, and I have just redesigned the rear suspension to a ZERO Roll setup.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Up until 1965 Corvair had a swing axle with a single universal or CV joint at the trans... just like a VW... Then they went fully independent with TWO universals (CV's?) per axle, per side... which eliminated the problem altogether.
A little too little... too late. I believe VW didn't change theirs until 1968!

Last night at a Historic Auto club meeting the entertainment was a promotional movie about three red 1962 Corvairs crossing the Darien Gap, the region between Panama and Columbia. Literally they drove three brand new Corvairs and three support 4WD Chevy trucks through the jungles, cutting trails with machettes and building bridges. All sorts of events were documented on film, including fording rivers, constructing small bridges out of tree trunks, and misjudging the narrow distance between trees. One memorable part was when one truck was being winched up a hill by another truck, and the cable snapped, allowing the first truck to slide backwards into the first of the Corvairs, crushing the grille and hood.
By the end of the trip, all six vehicles were just trashed, with their sides scraped and trim missing. Only one of the Corvairs stll had a single headlight, all others were smashed. Throughout the movie, the narrator kept extolling the virtues of the suspension, transaxle, and engine construction, and how these technical advances allowed the Corvairs to conquer the mighty impassable jungle.

When Volvo introduced the 850 in 1995, they optioned the Turbos with a 17" wheel and low profile tires. Within two years, a class action suit was filed by a woman who claimed that she had not been properly warned that damage might occur to the low profile tires or rims from potholes and curbs. What was ridiculous was that Volvo (and new owner Ford) agreed to settle with all 850 purchasers, giving them either $500 cash, or $1000 credit towards a new car or new 16" rims and tires.

Apparently, the crux of the issue was kinda overshadowed by the PRECEDENCE setting introduction of using computer-generated videos.
My daughter states that the Supreme Court remanded the case back to the lower court to be tried all over again after granting the use of the videos... but a verdict was to based upon ALL evidence submitted, not just the videos. (Kinda hard to do when the illustrations appear to make it "clear"... and as said prior, the defence for FIAT contended that the videos assumed "facts" not yet in evidence...)
I asked her to do some more research and I assume the last three numbers 617, 611, 822, and 244 might be the next citation numbers???
