sorry if this is a FAQ.

do you have to remove the crank pully to change the timing belt on a '78 X1/9.

any tips?

i've done dozens of timing belts on 124 DOHC engines. only on one of them, an 80 spider with low miles, did i have to undo the crank pully.

it was usual practice to "forget" to re-install the rear shroud after the 1st time the belt was replaced. and pre-79, i don't believe there ever was a rear shroud.

what about the 78 X1/9?

it looks like there might be a lower shroud
down there.

my brother-in-law just did a timing belt on his
'87 X. and he wound up pulling the crank pully.

however, i seem to remember, 10 yrs ago, helping
my brother with his '77.
i think he twisted and bent a shroud to get it out of the picture.
(we had just gone thru the '80 spider experience, and he didn't want to have to pop the crank pully at all cost).

any advice would be appreciated...

We had a previous thread where I thought that you had to on later 1500's, but many folks say that it's not necessary, and they have done it without taking the pulley off. I'm quite sure your 1300 could be done with the pulley in place without any problem. Good luck,

as far as the pulleys go - it's not hard to work around it with the timing belt itself... but putting the other belts back on it tough (worse with an AC car). I couldn't get the pulley apart, and wanted to take the AC compressor out anyway, so I fabricated a new alternator mount, and used a single belt for the Alt, crank, and water pump. not really hard to do, but tight working area and lack of familiarity with the process made it a 3 weekend (and lots of posts on this board) project.

Doing it again though would be much easier.

No idea how much my experience with a 1500 would vary with a 1300.

sorry for not being diligent, but i was on travel
with a
gawdawful-slow call-back account to surf with.

i planned to fly in on the red-eye and begin working on the car early in the morning.

just needed to know if i needed to line up an impact wrench for the crank pully.

in any event, the job went rather smoothly, save an annoying coolant leak.

luckily, the P/O apparently left off the lower rear cover, so the belt slid in behind the pully
-no problem.

one trick i might add is that i line up the
timing marks by placing the car in 4-th gear
and pushed it forward to turn the engine.

keeping the plugs in helps you from overshooting
- so does taking the keys out of the ignition

another tip: a 10mm open-end wrench makes a great tool for pulling back the tensioner spring.
you can pry it back a little, then wedge another
(who uses that 12mm anyway?) to keep it back.

i then push the tensioner bearing over and tighten to keep it slackened.

i usually advance the cam pulleys (whoops, still thinking DOHC -pulley) a couple teeth to take up slack before applying the belt.

the SOHC was much easier.

as i mentioned, i had a coolant leak (as mac described). it was coming from the tensioner bearing stud. this is apparently a thru-hole
that gets plugged by the stud. however, no matter how i tightened it, it still leaked.

i used a pair of nuts in a jam-nut configuration to turn the stud.

i wound up putting a couple turns of teflon plummers tape around the threads. this finally worked.

the total job woulda taken less than an hour
if i didn't have to futz with this leak...

luckily i kept my patience and didn't put the belt on until i knew it wasn't gonna leak again...

that could spoil you're day...

finally, with all the ruckus in the area i had lost track of the aux. pulley position.

i pulled the distributor cap to find that it had turned a bit.

i tried advancing the distributor but couldn't compensate enough before the vacuum module began to hit the bulkhead. i simply re-ordered the plug wires and backed the distributer to a more "normal" orientation.

i've been keeping the distributor nut semi-tight
so i can make adjustments as necessary.

i am still trying to dial in the best static timing position....
