Late and early are different. Late heads have a passage for the AIR system that runs the length of the head. This is filling up with coolant.
The only other (much more remote) possibility is that the head has been surfaced so much that the head bolts bottom in the block before clamping the gasket.. good luck,

If there is a little hole in the upper left corner, then you need to use the gasket that has a little flap that covers that little hole. That little hole is open to the EGR ports in the exhaust ports. The water runs from the thermostat housing, up the little hole, along the passage and into the exhaust port. Sealing off the hole will solve your problem.
