September 13 2000 at 1:38 PM</TD><TD vAlign=top align=right>Doc </TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=bottom colSpan=3><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3><!-- google_ad_section_start -->First, it's an all around wonderful idea.

Secondly, this may be the impetus to get the magazine off the ground. For example, lets say we end up with 8 or 10 chapters... with each chapter sending in an activity report, and have each send in a tech article, I think we have enough for a quartely magazine at the least.

The tech articles don't even have to be at the level of 5-speed 101 (though that would be excellent as a multi part serial!), but could include things as simple as changing speedo cables, etc... the stuff that crops up here on the forum regularly, and seems old hat to those of us who have done it once or twice.

The NY chapter seems ready to happen... there are enough of us to justify a group meeting, and I may have a great site for an autocross (working onthat one). I don't know if we can make it happen before the snow flies here, but early planning for next year may fruitful - it will also give us lots of time to get the word out.

What about marketing? The web is how everyone here has found us, but what about the casual fan? The lurker? The non-internet user? I know of at least 3 other running X's in the Albany area, but none of them have ever cropped up here. We are out there, and we are not alone... but how do we reach the others? Long term financial stability of such an organization will rely on the population density of members - it will justify meetings, which in turn will generate subscriptions to the mag - the more subscriptions we have, the better the product we can afford to turn out is (ie: for 100 members, it would be really hard to justify a color glossy.... with 1500 members, we could do something really nice).

Thoughts?

Are you near binghamton? Maybe we can arrange a meeting before the snow flies.

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->first: yes a wonderful idea, but remember, for all chapters, it will be a lot of work.

second: it will probably be a while before we have 8 to 10 chapters, and even if we did, a tech session from each per mag might be asking too much.
One or two large tech sessions like 5 speed 101 would be great for a main tech focus, either in whole, or in 4 quarterly parts. Then a small one like speedometer or accelerator cables. Then maybe something like a tips and tricks section, something on the order of Ulixs starter button in the engine compartment.

the rest of the magazine could include photos and reports from chapter get togethers, large get togethers like Oregon 2000, autocrosses, etc.

thirdly, marketing would probably be easier than you would think. We could get Fiat mechanics like Import Auto Tech, Performance Imports to carry copies in shop, and maybe even hold tech sessions, and place adds in the mags. Then have shops like Vicks, or IAP carry the mags, and place a small add in their catalogs, and websites. Would take some foot work, and salesmanship, but should be relatively easy.

We should look at between an 8 and 10 page mag to start with, after a while, depending on membership increasments, and money, we could expand the size, circulation, and visibility.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
