A milestone...

True Classic
...the consumate luddite (moi), who has never owned a digicam,
now has one courtesy of BrettBranch.
He got tired of reading my repeated apologies for not having pics,
so turned me onto a camera from his box of old toys.
And a card reader!

Stumbling through the processes, got as far as unloading pics to snapfish.
So here is link to 128 pics. Mostly showing current dash resto project,
and with a few random driveway shots (of dirty drivers...)

Dash resto was interesting. Perfect skin but several inches of both ends and the bottom metal framework were completely disintegrated. Those areas carefully cut away with cutoff wheel, then the rust-impregnated foam carved back, then coated foam with fiberglass mat/resin, then determined where ductwork screw holes needed after carving away excess mat to allow dash vents to sit flush with outer skin, then added a few more layers of mat/resin for the mounting points of ducts & lower tray/heater controls. Took many hours of careful trimming, fitting, & 'glas work. Suspect this dash is unique to Oregon climate with uncracked skin (due to no sun), and extreme rust (due to leaky windshield and dashfoam holding moisture against metal for months...years!

One pic shows how badly metal was destroyed. Few scraps of metal in foreground, with the rest being foam & rust scale. Fortunately the damage was localized, in spite of it being all-consuming.

Only a link to pics at this time, since I put these on snapfish, due to new photobucket being a PIA.

Is that dash from the wagon?

Wow. I shudder to think what mine looks like

Need to have you show me your process for fixing leaky windshields on 128s.

And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven

and the Lord said "Dude, MikeM got a freakin' digicam! Sweet!!"

Good thing I have an old Snapfish account. I didn't want to miss Mike's first pictures.

Nice work on the dash Mike. I wish I had your skills and determination.

Origin of rusty dash...

The dash with perfect skin covering rusty carnage is from
the white 2dr offered outta Albany OR last year.
Apparently that car never sold, and wound up in pickn'pull,
which is where I got dash.

Both of my 128 wagons came from Calif, so they
have totally toasted dash skins, and likely solid metal underneath.
Split Pea dash was nicely covered by PO with flexible
carpet, glued and formed to the contours.

NapaGrape dash had an aftermarket carpet with hemmed edges,
which didn't cover much, and looked like a halfass patch.
The aftermarket piece now is used to protect the perfect dash in Sedan,
and NapaGrape gets the refurbed dash from Albany 128.

See me at upcoming Mirafiori Gathering for rundown on
neatly sealing of sedan windshield without removing it.
It's heldfast for a year, but it had only started leaking,
and no rust had popped out.

nice work!

128 dash metal backing is thin indeed, what an excellent improvement. Wagon looks great in the sunshine.

Wrassling pics into submission...

Dang...turns out snapfish album can only be viewed by those with snapfish account (thx for tip JD).
Pasting separate pic link between tags doesn't seem to work either.
So...here are couple reloaded to photobucket...
Dash with metal trimmed, remaining metal ground down,
treated with phosacid, coated w/ epoxy primer.
Grey area is foambacker, after cutting away rust, before fiberglassing.

Same area after fiberglassing and cleanup of ragged 'glas edges.
Vent openings took alotta carving of 'glas so vent units would seat
properly, flush with outer skin of dash.

And the only pic that will exist of SplitPea with Daytonas & early grille...

More pics wrassled into submission...

Rust flakes are all that remained of metal backer
at ends and bottom of dash.
A few shards of steel remained...in foreground.

A few driveway shots...never to be repeated,
since I just sold SplitPea. As it turned out,
I'm so spoiled by hotrod dualcarb 1500 in sedan,
that I just couldn't adapt to stock 1300.
Plus I couldn't see pulling out a freshly rebuilt 1300.
Plus the potential buyer of NapaGrape felt it
was more of a project than he wanted.
So...all the signs pointed towards offering SplitPea to him.
Which means I'll return to working on NapaGrape wagon,
hopefully with a new mindset...of not going nuts with
detail...just put in hotrod motor and call it good.

I have to send my pics to facebook, and from there copy and paste to this forum for posting. People keep asking me why my facebook account is filled with boring car photos of mechanical themes. Photobook is not as easy to use now as it was last year. If it were possible to load photos to this forum directly from the smartphone or the desktop, it would be great.
