So, do we know what the spring is suppose to do originally when it is in the uncompressed state and whether the system does something we don't want it to do when compressed?

I can't see the spring as doing anything other than keeping tension on the pivot half moon while it travels in the hook. In that regard, it should be under some but not excessive tension, IMO. I'm going to rebuild the original slave, so I can always switch back to that DTR if need be.
