The driver side fan works just fine!
I tried to follow the two wires for the faulty fan but they get buried in the harness inside the trunk.
Unfortunately my repair manual does not include any electric wiring diagrams.
My car manual mentions one relay for both fans and since one is working the relay should be ok.
Any suggestions on how to trace this fault?

If you want to do this the pretty way without ripping apart the harness, simply get one of the fault tracers from Radio Shack (though given the shoddy wiring on these cars, the light may be on more than it is off!!!)
The uglier, but easier way would simply be to disconnect the wiring at the relay and run new wire from the relay to the fan. It isn't that hard to hide the wiring, so it might not be all THAT ugly. DO make a note to yourself, as you may forget about it, or totally confuse some future owner (the source of most of my electrical misery with my car is repairs by the PO... he did decent work, but failed to keep any notes... and used only one color of wire!!!)

If there is 1 relay that runs both fans , you know that is good. Next check for power at both fans with a test light. If there is no power then you know that the problem is between the relay and the fan, easiest fix is to run a new wire and tape it to the outside of the harness. If you have power at both fans. Take your test light, hook it to the power side of your battery and check for ground at the fan connectors(the light will light up if you have a good ground). If it is dim, you have a poor connection at you ground.If you have no ground trace your harness to see where it grounds to the body.(Anybody out there who knows?).If you have power ground then you have a bum fan motor. I opened the fuse box, and remove the two screws holding the fuse box to the cover, to check the wires that connect to the relays. (I actually never saw them)
After I look behind the fuse box, I remember the complains that everyone has about the Fiat electric wiring and simply panicked!
I didn't want to open a can of worms, (I needed my car to be operational by 6 AM next day) so I carefully put back the fuse holder into the cover and installed the two screws that hold it into the cover and pry that I didn't move anything critical back there.
I think I may have two options here:
1) To run a cable from the working fan (the fuse for both fans is 25A). But I am not sure if that will be too much current for only one cable.
(Fiat may have installed two independent wires in case one failed; you still have the other)
2) To install a relay powered from the battery and triggered from the working fan?
If you have any suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated!

I would spend some time to figure out how the original wiring works and then find the problem and repair it.
Running new wires because one doesn't want to deal with figuring out the problem is bad style and will make the next owner of your car call you a DPO.

There are two independent circuits (one fuse and one relay) for each fan.
Of course this is the original set up, which might have been changed.

My two previous 'X also had AC, and I know that when the fans started working they both do it at the same time, regardless if the AC is turned on or not. (Maybe they both have a stuck pressure switch?)
By any chance do you know the location of the freon pressure switch?

On the A/C line there is a sort of black bottle, that is the receiver/dryer. Right next to it, towards the front end of the car, also on the refrigerant line, is the freon pressure switch. It is normally wrapped in a ball of soft mastic (to prevent ice buildup), with wires coming out of it.

The motor seems to have frozen up (doesn't turn very easily by hand. PO wired a manual switch for the fans, and I am not sure if the original thermo switch is operational or not. The fuse for the circuit is blown, but I can still switch the fan on manually if I need too. When i replace the fuse and turn on the switch, both fans tried to run, but there was an awful racket and then the fuse blew out. I assumed that the motor being bad would not allow it to turn and built up way too much resistance. any thoughts or ideas? I have not really gotten under there and looked at it good, but Ibelieve on my car both fans tried to run via that switch...they have never turned on by themselves at a certain temperature...but then again circuit is not running properly...

The driver side fan works just fine!
I tried to follow the two wires for the faulty fan but they get buried in the harness inside the trunk.
Unfortunately my repair manual does not include any electric wiring diagrams.
My car manual mentions one relay for both fans and since one is working the relay should be ok.
Any suggestions on how to trace this fault?

If you want to do this the pretty way without ripping apart the harness, simply get one of the fault tracers from Radio Shack (though given the shoddy wiring on these cars, the light may be on more than it is off!!!)
The uglier, but easier way would simply be to disconnect the wiring at the relay and run new wire from the relay to the fan. It isn't that hard to hide the wiring, so it might not be all THAT ugly. DO make a note to yourself, as you may forget about it, or totally confuse some future owner (the source of most of my electrical misery with my car is repairs by the PO... he did decent work, but failed to keep any notes... and used only one color of wire!!!)

If there is 1 relay that runs both fans , you know that is good. Next check for power at both fans with a test light. If there is no power then you know that the problem is between the relay and the fan, easiest fix is to run a new wire and tape it to the outside of the harness. If you have power at both fans. Take your test light, hook it to the power side of your battery and check for ground at the fan connectors(the light will light up if you have a good ground). If it is dim, you have a poor connection at you ground.If you have no ground trace your harness to see where it grounds to the body.(Anybody out there who knows?).If you have power ground then you have a bum fan motor. I opened the fuse box, and remove the two screws holding the fuse box to the cover, to check the wires that connect to the relays. (I actually never saw them)
After I look behind the fuse box, I remember the complains that everyone has about the Fiat electric wiring and simply panicked!
I didn't want to open a can of worms, (I needed my car to be operational by 6 AM next day) so I carefully put back the fuse holder into the cover and installed the two screws that hold it into the cover and pry that I didn't move anything critical back there.
I think I may have two options here:
1) To run a cable from the working fan (the fuse for both fans is 25A). But I am not sure if that will be too much current for only one cable.
(Fiat may have installed two independent wires in case one failed; you still have the other)
2) To install a relay powered from the battery and triggered from the working fan?
If you have any suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated!

I would spend some time to figure out how the original wiring works and then find the problem and repair it.
Running new wires because one doesn't want to deal with figuring out the problem is bad style and will make the next owner of your car call you a DPO.

There are two independent circuits (one fuse and one relay) for each fan.
Of course this is the original set up, which might have been changed.

My two previous 'X also had AC, and I know that when the fans started working they both do it at the same time, regardless if the AC is turned on or not. (Maybe they both have a stuck pressure switch?)

On the A/C line there is a sort of black bottle, that is the receiver/dryer. Right next to it, towards the front end of the car, also on the refrigerant line, is the freon pressure switch. It is normally wrapped in a ball of soft mastic (to prevent ice buildup), with wires coming out of it.

The motor seems to have frozen up (doesn't turn very easily by hand. PO wired a manual switch for the fans, and I am not sure if the original thermo switch is operational or not. The fuse for the circuit is blown, but I can still switch the fan on manually if I need too. When i replace the fuse and turn on the switch, both fans tried to run, but there was an awful racket and then the fuse blew out. I assumed that the motor being bad would not allow it to turn and built up way too much resistance. any thoughts or ideas? I have not really gotten under there and looked at it good, but Ibelieve on my car both fans tried to run via that switch...they have never turned on by themselves at a certain temperature...but then again circuit is not running properly...

Probably all gummed up, or corroded, etc. I would remove that fan & see if you can put it on the workbench & find out why it is resists turning. -Mac.
