1300/1500 visual difference?

I'm going to look at an X1/9 engine. It's not in a car. How do you tell which engine it is? Is there a casting on the block or something? This is a carbed engine with all intake system intact. But my car is an '86 with FI.

I don't want a spare engine that doesn't even fit. Tips???

Lots of info on those charts. It looks like the 1300 engine block number starts with 128 and the 1500 starts with a 138.

well thats partially correct jim, the 78 non-interference engines are cast with 138 in some spots

Hi Thai,

Is there a certain location to find the 138 on the block? Or would you happen to know the VIN number where that change took place? I would like to check my 78's "interference status" before I go pulling the engine out and messing around with it in general.
