As I'm new here (although I recognise a few names from mirafiori Forum etc) I thought I would post my experience with improving performance of my 1300 X1/9.

I live in New Zealand, where we are fortunate to still get new Fiats, in fact there have always been several Fiats available at any time since the 1950s !

My X had a 1290 motor, to which I added a Lotus L1 cam grind, nicely ported 1116 head and twin DCNF40 carbs. This setup was dynoed at around 92bhp and went pretty well until the rings died.

At that point I was intending to fit a 1500, but instead chose to use a 1580 SOHC motor from a Fiat Tipo (kind of a big Uno, see my fiance's Tipo at www.carpictures.com, click on Fiat, and select "silver Tipo DGT" from left panel). These motors produce around 85bhp, and don't breathe particularly well, although they are very torquey.

Fitting the motor was a real pain, needing mount mods, and a bottom pulley change (to 1500 X I think) so we could use a belt that would work with the vernier cam wheel. The flywheel was lightened, the carbs fitted, and a custom built exhaust. The internals (apart from cam) are totally standard. The motor revs just as well as a 1300, with really good power to over 7500rpm. Power is estimated at 120bhp, backed up by a couple of bench racing programs. Best 1/4 mile time I've done is 16.2 (car is in road trim on road tyres).

Biggest problem is the original clutch, which cannot handle the power very well. DCNF manifold doesn't match intake ports very well, some porting would make a big difference as the intake is partially blocked. Will do this when engine comes apart.

Shame you guys in In USA didn't get this motor as it is a good development of 128 type engine, and incorporates Uno turbo developments such as oil jets onto underside of pistons.

Anyway, I have lots of pix, but only a couple online at present and they are a couple of years old, at carpictures.com (look for "1978 Fiat X1/9 - verde"). Hmmm, maybe I can figure how to insert pix on this forum sometime.

cheers from an autumnal New Zealand
