[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi John,

knowing nothing about AC I can tell you that even without AC it is everything else than easy. If you are trying to replace the complete wire (including the insulation, sorry for the wrong word) you have also to remove the handbrake lever to gain access to a clip which holds the insulation in place. Also you should hire someone with very small hands (someone said the Italian workers took their ten year olders to the fiat factory to install the cables) to get access to the wire at the footpedal. The rest should be easy but prepare yourself in needing a full day on doing this.

Good luck and tell us about all the scratches on your hands.

Remove the center dash console. It will give you easier access. Wear gloves!! I cut myself up pretty bad the first time I've done this. Don't loose the clip that holds the cable to the connection at the top of the valve cover!!! If you do, it's darn near impossible to find(fling!!), but can be held together permanently with two small hose clamps(It really works good too). Relax and just think about how good it will feel when your done. We're all rooting for you.:)
James

P.S. You could get it home if you have some string. I've done it years ago when was stranded 30 miles away from my house. It's not easy to juggle the gas and shift with your right hand at the same time, but I did make it home. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hey John!

Is the entire cable and black sheath wrecked, or just the cable wrecked inside the sheath??

I ask because it is much easier to replace the cable if you can re-use the existing sheath.

If so, just pull the dead cable pieces out of the old sheath, pull the new cable out of its sheath, and slide the new cable into the pre-installed old sheath.

Even THAT is not a one-handed job though. You have to start in the footwell and slide the cable back toward the engine, because of the connector on the one end of the cable. You should also lubricate the cable before putting it in...

If you have to replace the whole thing sheath & all (example: old sheath is damaged or you cannot get all the cable fragments out) then it would be easiest to:

Remove the connector end from the old cable *without* removing the old sheath just yet. Take the new cable/sheath assembly and attach it to one end of the old sheath, butted end-to-end, by electrical tape or similar. Then you will have to dig into the footwell and center hump as mentioned to free the old sheath, but once that is done you can just go back to the engine bay and start pulling on the old sheath, and this (in theory) will drag the new one right into its place.

That also assumes that the tape holds and nothing snags your progress! :eek:

Just go at it slow & easy, remember to keep your patience and wits about you, and don't let yourself feel rushed or else the job will get harder like a Chinese finger puzzle! Good Luck, and may the X be with you!

****

PS to JKrass: I drove my '75 about 40 miles with a string tied to the throttle at the carb! Yes it works, it will get you there, but MAN it ain't easy to manipulate! I learned that trick with gokarts when I was a kid. Used a string to defeat the governor on that engine. Fastest gokart in town heehee! ;) -Mac.

Thanks guys for all the great advice, and for the great moral support! I'm gonna have to cogitate on this for a while & come up with a battle plan for the weekend.

The part that most worries me is the footwell manipulations - I think the A/C car has more plumbing in the front/center area that might impede access. I thought of trying to recruit my very mechanically adept, 11-year-old nephew to help out with this part but after reading James' post concerning lacerations, thought better of it (plus he probably wouldn't condescend to work on something that wasn't a "muscle car").

I'm gonna try to "string" the car on home tomorrow - it's a short ride, but there are about 5 traffic lights. :( Then take it nice & easy over the weekend . .

So, again, muchas gracias! and I'll keep you posted -

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->...you may not get the luxury of simply sliding your new cable into the existing sheath. That is, I think your '87 uses a cable with a crimped connector at the engine end as well as the one on the footwell end. I do not know wether you can pull that through the sheath, I've only done that trick on my 1300, which has just bare cable on engine end.

In theory, you could still remove the engine-end connectors and recrimp it when done, but that seems iffy unless you had the right crimping tool.

At any rate, do let us know how the '87 X1/9 performs when idling at 3 g's with a string tied to the throttle linkage! :) -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Mac, you're right about the cable - the new one arrived & has crimped fittings at both ends.
The sheathed section seems to be only about half the length of the cable (from the top of the engine to the area of the handbrake lever, it would appear), and access for that section doesn't look too bad - there are a couple of removeable panels in the spare tire compartment to the engine area and the center tunnel to the handbrake lever. The footwell part, though, might be another story . .

I spoke by phone with one of the guys at the IAP tech question line who had done this repair several times, and got some hints which I hope will become clear once I get everything apart. In essence, "installation is NOT the reverse of disassembly". We shall see.

Ulix - thanks for the wedge idea . . it's a short ride, don't see why it wouldn't work. I'll try it tomorrow with some string for backup.

Thanks again, will update over the weekend
