[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The Alfa engined car uses a Dallara bodykit with a substantial rear aero-wing. Rest assured that the drag generated is painfully higher than on a stock X. For a start the car is nearly 12" wider than normal!

The software I use is a simple DOS based affair but it comes with a substantial (1000 odd) library of cars (mostly American) including the X1/9.

The options for each car include engine parameters, engine location, gearing, drive type, car size, weight, ride height, wheel size, tyre size, width, profile, etc. The drag coefficient is one of the parameters you can play with.

The analysis includes straight foward acceleration with optimised gear changing (damned useful for anyone racing an X) and optimised standing start. It also includes a rolling start. It doesn't stop there though - you can spend ages optimising various parameters automatically to your criteria, or generate power and torque curves.

For any real engine tinkerers/tuners out there you soon realise that it is actually quite limited, but the accuracy of the estimates is quite daunting!

Yes, has an existing list of 100s of cars. My problem is lots of them are in seriously detuned US form, here we have no catalytic converters and stuff. Easy to create new cars, and I have about 20 volumes of "World Cars", the annual published by the Automobile Club of Italy, which gives comprehensive specs for (in theory) every car produced per year. Great source of info for mixing and matching engines/gear ratios/bodies, etc.

For example, I have programmed in all sorts of Fiats.... 903 powered 126, 1100cc bike-powered 126, Strada Abarth powered Uno, etc. etc. as well as my own X with +10bhp, +20bhp, +30bhp.......<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The first thing I did was plug in the specs for my race car, but I was seriously dissappointed until I realised the sort of limitations the program has built-in.

No options for slicks, for manipulating the power/torque curves, or altering the balance/weight of the engine components. The whole thing is based on an assumed value. Sure you can compensate in some ways but it never seemed quite right.

Strangely enough when I heard about an Alfa engined X I did the expected and plugged in the details. Some fiddling around presented some nice results but nothing quite so quick as your estimate....then I plugged in a hot version of the engine (the Auto-Italia guys are getting 500+bhp out of the turbo'd versions of the same engine). I had to stop there, pulling 3G under acceleration was getting silly!
