Alternator belt removal to change timing belt.

Hi all,

the manual says it is, but is it really strictly necessary to remove the alternator belt when changing the timing belt? Looks as if there is enough room without taking it off. I say this as I seem to recall that it can be quite difficult to get back on.

Cheers,
Dominic.

Not hard to get alternator belt back on...

Install it on the water pump and alternator pulleys, and just start it at the top of the crankshaft pulley... and then crank the starter for a moment. That will pull the belt the rest of the way onto the crankshaft - like magic.

(Not my idea, it's an old Xweb.1 tip, but I've used it many times).

I always put the car in 4th or 5th gear, loop the belt over the crank and alternator, then push the car while holding the belt against the water pump pulley.
