To make a long story short I took it apart and put it back together without finding anything wrong. I took it to a local alt. shop for testing and its putting out power fine on their test equipment. I put it back into the car and still no charging until I disconnect the positive cable from the battery and then it puts out voltage.
I jumpered a cable from the alt. to the +ve of the battery and still the same thing so I know its not the wiring. Does anybody have any idea of where the power is going and why I can't get output from the alt when hooked to the battery?

The smallest still puts out 80 amps. So if you want to run that off road light bar then put one of these on your x. I was going to do this until I discovered that mine is still working and I may anyway. The advantage is that they have an internal voltage reg as well as the size. Stu<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Wayne Wright has a GM alt/reg on it. Haven't
looked at lower mount, but upper mount and
belt adjustment is via a wooden wedge between
alt and engine block.

One of the interesting things about salvaging
derelict Fiats is finding all the cute little
things that POs have inflicted.

I will be designing/fabricating the necessary brackets. If it comes out OK I will post the design.

I haven't actually put it in the but it looks like the adjusting bold of the G.M. alt. will fit into the existing mounting bracket without any adjustments. A couple of people have asked me what model of G.M. car it came off but I don't know since it was in a pile in my friends garage and he has no idea.
Since the G.M. alt has a bolt in voltage reg. I just have to figure out the connections to buypass my existing one but I don't think that should be to hard. Does anybody know what the "E" connection on a G.M. reg is for? I have figured out the field and power but I have one extra connection on the G.M. that I haven't seen on other alts. They use external voltage regulators and put out about 65 amps. Can anybody tell me what the wiring code (colours) for the fiat voltage regulator is. The S. goes to battery positive The I is the Ignition switch feed and the L is the Lamp circuit. With out knowing what it came off of it is harder to wire correctly some GM had a redundant circuit that was use for nothing in the vehicle. could this possibly be your E circuit? How many terminals on this alt. and what is their orientation?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

At least we know that there are options other than the factory alt. that put out sig. more voltage.
We checked the standard fiat alternator and it only puts out a full 30 amps at 5000 rpm. Not the best alt. for driving with the defroster, wipers and lights on in stop and go traffic. I hope others can make use of this discovery. Stu<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

It is basically an ampmeter hooked up to the alt mounted on a test bench. There is no regulator they just spin the alt at various speeds and measure the output. I think they can load it but I'm not sure if they use resistors for this or how they do it since I haven't seen the rig. Stu

P.S. The alt. I took out of the toyota truck (75-78? pickup) fits perfectly except for the adjusting bracket. A simple cludge fixed this and I eliminated the old bracket and the air conditioning bracket. I now have 40 amps at only 1700 rpm which means in stop and go traffic I can run eveything with no problem. Now for the light upgrade.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I now have just under 50 amps of power at 5000 rpm. The toyota reg fits in perfectly. Total cost under $30. This may be a kludge but it works really well. Time to get the lights hooked up.
