I have a 1976 X and just replaced the timing belt and alternator belt yesterday. After fitting the timing belt, I turned the engine by hand to listen and feel for anything hitting. I didn't notice anything. Then I put on a new alternator belt by using a remote starter switch to get it on as recommended in past links. I then turned the engine by hand again just to recheck everything. I then started the car and noticed a knocking noise. I quickly shut it down. Then went throught the entire process of re-installing the timing belt. After spinning the engine by hand again, I started her up again and heard the same noise. I let it run and grabbed by mechanics stethoscope and listened over the valves and heard no knocking. I then listened over the water pump and alternator and can hear a knocking which is loudest over the alternator.
My question is, is the alternator belt that I have to small? I noticed after putting it on there is no slack at all. I didn't have to use any leverage against the alternator to tighten the belt. It now appears that the fan blades on the alternator are hitting the water pump pulley.
Has anyone had this problem? Should I go and try to find a slightly longer belt?
I think that I'll go mad if I continue to listen to the knocking. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Two choices: either a little bit tighter on the belt(but not so tight as to damage the alt or water pump bearings) or the next size longer belt. Good luck,

Will this condition occur on the two belt part numbers you suggested ? Perhaps manufacturing tolerances on body/bracketing is a factor also.
i.e. The same belt might not produce the fanblade/waterpump riding condition on other autos. dunno.

I just lited a post on belts with several numbers but now can't find it MYSELF! Guess I don't do everything right either!
The Gates belt for my '79 called for a WP, ALT, and CRANK belt with a part # of 7325.
My Smog pump called for a 7270, I ended up installing a 7290.
Buy a few in "succession", return the ones ya don't want... LET US KNOW what ya find!

I cut the alternator belt off yesterday and amazingly enough, the noise stopped. I found another belt that is longer than the stock. It is a Dayco "Top Cog" belt #15325. It is slightly longer than the original and gives me the ability to actually use leverage against the alternator so that I can tighten the belt.
Well here's the new problem. I can now see that some of the alternator fan blades are actually hitting the water pump pulley. It appears that the pulley with the fan blades on the alternator is bent slightly. When looking straight down on it from the top, there is a gap between the alternator on the left side of the fan blades and it appears to be almost touching on the right side. Do you think that it would be O.K. to pry the blades away from the alternator body to try and straighten it back out? I can't tell if the water pump pulley is bent or out of whack.
Any suggestions on a fix would be greatly appreciated. It makes me entirely to nervous hearing metal contacting metal. I cringe every time I hear it thinking the darn thing might explode or disentegrate at any moment.

I doubt you bent the shaft... but I bet you bent the fins trying to wal the old belt on or off.
Carefully bend the fins to clear... should be able to with a screwdriver or pliers.

The wheel was replaced, and once again she's off the jack stands! HooRah!!!

I have a 1976 X and just replaced the timing belt and alternator belt yesterday. After fitting the timing belt, I turned the engine by hand to listen and feel for anything hitting. I didn't notice anything. Then I put on a new alternator belt by using a remote starter switch to get it on as recommended in past links. I then turned the engine by hand again just to recheck everything. I then started the car and noticed a knocking noise. I quickly shut it down. Then went throught the entire process of re-installing the timing belt. After spinning the engine by hand again, I started her up again and heard the same noise. I let it run and grabbed by mechanics stethoscope and listened over the valves and heard no knocking. I then listened over the water pump and alternator and can hear a knocking which is loudest over the alternator.
My question is, is the alternator belt that I have to small? I noticed after putting it on there is no slack at all. I didn't have to use any leverage against the alternator to tighten the belt. It now appears that the fan blades on the alternator are hitting the water pump pulley.
Has anyone had this problem? Should I go and try to find a slightly longer belt?
I think that I'll go mad if I continue to listen to the knocking. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Two choices: either a little bit tighter on the belt(but not so tight as to damage the alt or water pump bearings) or the next size longer belt. Good luck,

Will this condition occur on the two belt part numbers you suggested ? Perhaps manufacturing tolerances on body/bracketing is a factor also.
i.e. The same belt might not produce the fanblade/waterpump riding condition on other autos. dunno.

I just lited a post on belts with several numbers but now can't find it MYSELF! Guess I don't do everything right either!
The Gates belt for my '79 called for a WP, ALT, and CRANK belt with a part # of 7325.
My Smog pump called for a 7270, I ended up installing a 7290.
Buy a few in "succession", return the ones ya don't want... LET US KNOW what ya find!

I cut the alternator belt off yesterday and amazingly enough, the noise stopped. I found another belt that is longer than the stock. It is a Dayco "Top Cog" belt #15325. It is slightly longer than the original and gives me the ability to actually use leverage against the alternator so that I can tighten the belt.
Well here's the new problem. I can now see that some of the alternator fan blades are actually hitting the water pump pulley. It appears that the pulley with the fan blades on the alternator is bent slightly. When looking straight down on it from the top, there is a gap between the alternator on the left side of the fan blades and it appears to be almost touching on the right side. Do you think that it would be O.K. to pry the blades away from the alternator body to try and straighten it back out? I can't tell if the water pump pulley is bent or out of whack.
Any suggestions on a fix would be greatly appreciated. It makes me entirely to nervous hearing metal contacting metal. I cringe every time I hear it thinking the darn thing might explode or disentegrate at any moment.

I doubt you bent the shaft... but I bet you bent the fins trying to wal the old belt on or off.
Carefully bend the fins to clear... should be able to with a screwdriver or pliers.

The wheel was replaced, and once again she's off the jack stands! HooRah!!!
Tomorrow I'll get to take her out and let the wind blow through my hair.
