It also goes to show that some days get better as they go along.

Saturday morning started with Eric showing up at my house with a tow dolly behind his Ford truck. After retiming my 3P, we set out at about 10am towards SeaTac, WA, about 3 hours to the north, where a lead on another 3P had developed. (Thanks John Allen!) Pulling into the driveway, we immediately noted the black and moss green hatchback. The car was straight, complete, and overall in fair condition for not being driven in 2 years. As far as a potential parts car, this one surpassed my expectations. At this point, the day was looking pretty good.

After a quick inspection of the car, we began to pull the head, which the owner did not want to part with as it had been ported, and the cam and adjustable pulley. When this was done, we went down to this guy's shed where he pulled out another ported Yugo head with a Delta cam (#R257- anyone know the specs on it?), match-ported intake and exhaust manifolds, and a 34 DATR, with all work having been done by Ray Mortenson. At this point, life was getting damn good!

...but then it got better! Eric pulled out some spare rims that we had brought along for the tow back to Salem, two 14" Beta wheels. The guy looked at them, and asked if we wanted to trade them for some other wheels he had, as he wanted a complete set of the Beta wheels for his 124 Spider. (Don't ask, he already had two on it) His trade offer was a set of CD-39's, the three-spoke ones that only came on the '74 X's. Eric was in heaven! We quickly worked a deal to get the remaining two Beta wheels at Eric's house up to this guy, and settled up on the 3P and the other parts. Loading all of our loot in the truck, and the 3P on the dolly, we headed south towards Portland, dreaming of the potential uses for all of the parts.

We arrived in Salem at around 11pm, and went to sleep. I was up at 6am washing Eric's new rims, waiting for the rest of the house to get up. After breakfast, we unloaded and washed the 3P. Originally a bright pastel green (Milano Verde), the original buyer had the dealership paint it with black metallic instead, but kept the dark green interior. With a little rubbing compound, the black paint started to come back. Although there are numerous chips and dings where the bright green shows through, we are considering keeping and touching up the black.

As for the new head/intake/exhaust/carb set-up, it will probably go onto Eric's '77 Rally before we take it to Ashland for Oregon2001. So if you are attending Or01, keep an eye and ear out for it - it will be hard to miss!

But wait, there is more to the story...
Sunday afternoon Eric and I went to look at a pair of late X's and a '70/'71 124 coupe. The X's were clearly not going anywhere soon, and will sit until we have space available for them, and adequate time to evaluate them. As for the coupe, it was situated at the base of a cedar tree along the edge of a field. Alas, it had sat too long under a cedar tree without a hood or window glass, and had served as a trampoline for some enthusiastic children. By the time we clawed through the tree branches, mud, and insect nests in the engine compartment, tossed out the computer and monitor that had been stored in the trunk, and poked a stick at the pile of unknown stuff in the interior, we came to the conclusion that the coupe was perhaps better off
left as a planter box for wildflowers. Too bad!

Ok, that's almost the end. Pictures will soon be up on the Mirafiori Forum, and updates made as time and project space are available. And in my (apparently) quest to acquire all remaining 3P's in the Pacific Northwest, I will continue to keep you informed.

And now, the end.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
