Most are insanely impractical and I don't even bother boring you guys with them, but I think this one would work farily well. Let me know what you think. What I'm thinking of is changing the tail lights to the 850 style. Basically these lights are circles and I belive they were two-tone (red top/amber bottom) for the Euro market and just red for the American market. If you had a set of these (or maybe two on each side) I suppose it would be pretty simple to rig them up to the x. Many cars of the time (Stratos, many Ferraris) had these style lights. Filled the holes... you could take this whole thing a step further and fill both "light pods" with sheet metal and flatten the entire back... I'd paint it semi-gloss black... install a plate and frame, and then a couple of Ferrari type lights on either side.
By the way, "BABY 308" is still available as a custom CA plate... That would top off the conversion, I think!

Spray it over with flat black paint. Do em both and let them dry. Put them back on the car and turn on the lights. I like it. I have done it to all of my X's since the 80's. It looks pretty good at night. As for doing it for real, you can also use Opel GT lights or reproduction Ferrari lights for kit cars.

I don't want a ferrari kit car, but I do think having round talilights would enhance the styling of the x. Thinking about it just now, I seem to recall a local car a while back with a black rectangular panel on each side with dual red circular lights. It actually happens to belong to my local fiat mechanic (I found this out about six months ago) but since the car has been parted out for reasons unknown to me. I belive the car is in his yard. If you were wanting to go the 4-taillight route, I'd suggest using the 4 taillights from a 1969-71 Fiat 850 Sport Coupe, instead. These are slightly smaller diameter than the earlier Fiat 850 Sedan/Coupe lights, & I think would be more to-scale for the rear of your car. Lenses for these are available in (USA-style) all-4-red or the (Euro-style) amber top/red bottom outer lense (brake/turn/running light) & the clear top/red reflector bottom (reverse light) lense.
Best bet would be to try to locate some of these housings used, then get new lenses here or overseas.
Another similar option would be the Opel GT taillights, perhaps from a junkyard?

This car by the way, is stripped down to the shell at this point, but I wanted to see how everything was mounted. Basically, it looked like there were two rectangular holes in the sheetmetal where the wires came through and one 850 coupe (or sedan) light was placed over each hole. The whole rear of the car was painted semi-gloss black (which looks awesome...someone recommended this in a previous post-thanks!). What I'd like to know is what do you see when the stock lights are removed? Are the two rectangular holes where the stock wires came through? Basically, what other modifications might he have made that I'm not aware of. I belive there were rivets visible on parts of the rear panel, but that looks like factory work to me. The 'hole' where the taillight mounts is backed by the metal panel you can see from inside the rear trunk. The one that the fixture's mounting studs go through. Without the light in place, you will just see that from outside.
Here's an interesting variation on the idea: anyone remember Eric from West Seattle, who owned that incredibly badass Lancia Scorpion? Anyone ever see what he did to the taillights on that car? It was very impressive, he not only removed the stock fixtures, he then proceeded to cut the entire section of body panel away between them, creating basically a huge opening running the width of the rear end, then he mounted in that place a fit piece of diamond-patterned grate, painted black, then mounted 4 round lights to that - BANG - F40 style rear end treatment!
It really looked hot too on his car, he took great care in the execution of the mod. Just thought I'd mention it since it is quasi-related to the topic, although I do not know whether one would want to do that to an X - I don't know what kind of effect that might have on structurals - not to mention the obvious uselessness of the rear trunk afterward... -Mac.

The car you saw just had a 'replacement' grille installed. Many use expanded steel, fiberglass panels, or other such items and use an appropiate light assembly to create what you've mentioned.

Basically these lights are circles and I belive they were two-tone (red top/amber bottom) for the Euro market and just red for the American market. If you had a set of these (or maybe two on each side) I suppose it would be pretty simple to rig them up to the x. Many cars of the time (Stratos, many Ferraris) had these style lights. Filled the holes... you could take this whole thing a step further and fill both "light pods" with sheet metal and flatten the entire back... I'd paint it semi-gloss black... install a plate and frame, and then a couple of Ferrari type lights on either side.
By the way, "BABY 308" is still available as a custom CA plate... That would top off the conversion, I think!

Spray it over with flat black paint. Do em both and let them dry. Put them back on the car and turn on the lights. I like it. I have done it to all of my X's since the 80's. It looks pretty good at night. As for doing it for real, you can also use Opel GT lights or reproduction Ferrari lights for kit cars.

Thinking about it just now, I seem to recall a local car a while back with a black rectangular panel on each side with dual red circular lights. It actually happens to belong to my local fiat mechanic (I found this out about six months ago) but since the car has been parted out for reasons unknown to me. I belive the car is in his yard. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Your idea of the 850 Sedan/Coupe lamps sounds good, lenses were available in all-red (USA) & amber TOP/red BOTTOM (Euro) styles, still available new at some Fiat parts vendors.
If you were wanting to go the 4-taillight route, I'd suggest using the 4 taillights from a 1969-71 Fiat 850 Sport Coupe, instead. These are slightly smaller diameter than the earlier Fiat 850 Sedan/Coupe lights, & I think would be more to-scale for the rear of your car. Lenses for these are available in (USA-style) all-4-red or the (Euro-style) amber top/red bottom outer lense (brake/turn/running light) & the clear top/red reflector bottom (reverse light) lense.
Best bet would be to try to locate some of these housings used, then get new lenses here or overseas.
Another similar option would be the Opel GT taillights, perhaps from a junkyard?
Just a thought...

This car by the way, is stripped down to the shell at this point, but I wanted to see how everything was mounted. Basically, it looked like there were two rectangular holes in the sheetmetal where the wires came through and one 850 coupe (or sedan) light was placed over each hole. The whole rear of the car was painted semi-gloss black (which looks awesome...someone recommended this in a previous post-thanks!). What I'd like to know is what do you see when the stock lights are removed? Are the two rectangular holes where the stock wires came through? Basically, what other modifications might he have made that I'm not aware of. I belive there were rivets visible on parts of the rear panel, but that looks like factory work to me. The 'hole' where the taillight mounts is backed by the metal panel you can see from inside the rear trunk. The one that the fixture's mounting studs go through. Without the light in place, you will just see that from outside.
Here's an interesting variation on the idea: anyone remember Eric from West Seattle, who owned that incredibly badass Lancia Scorpion? Anyone ever see what he did to the taillights on that car? It was very impressive, he not only removed the stock fixtures, he then proceeded to cut the entire section of body panel away between them, creating basically a huge opening running the width of the rear end, then he mounted in that place a fit piece of diamond-patterned grate, painted black, then mounted 4 round lights to that - BANG - F40 style rear end treatment!
It really looked hot too on his car, he took great care in the execution of the mod. Just thought I'd mention it since it is quasi-related to the topic, although I do not know whether one would want to do that to an X - I don't know what kind of effect that might have on structurals - not to mention the obvious uselessness of the rear trunk afterward... -Mac.

The car you saw just had a 'replacement' grille installed. Many use expanded steel, fiberglass panels, or other such items and use an appropiate light assembly to create what you've mentioned.
Don't think you can do that on an X without removing the trunk (Scorps don't have a rear trunk).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
