[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I think you'd be suprised at just how seemingly small and insignificant the modifications would need to be to improve the X1/9s aerodynamics.

Take for instance the windscreen, the exposed wiper blades are a disaster area - admittedly these are actually very hard to alter, but moving as much of the mechanism as possible lower down would be a huge improvement. The other thing is the raised chrome drains on either side of the screen. Supposedly these prevent rain water from running across to the side windows, but we all know that make very little difference in that respect but they DO disturb the otherwise smooth airflow. The gutters on the roof have a similar effect.

Creating a flush seal on the front luggage cover, especially on the leading edge would help no end. The headlamps too cause trouble but nothing short of simply ditching them and converting to recessed lighting with a flush fit cover is going to help.

A proper ground effect front spoiler would be of great assistance - not for the ground effect but just to effectively control the airflow at the front of the car. Ducting the radiator airflow (as on my race car) goes a long way in the same department.

Taking a leaf out of the Mk I MR2 design book and fitting a lip spoiler to the trailing edge of the roof would be a massive advantage, especially at high speeds where the pressure wave would otherwise cause massive turbulance when it reaches that point.

You can't do much about the side windows unfortunately - the recess is too deep to do anything about - but it would be nice to have the window moved outward by about 0.5 inch - maybe even fitted flush with the top of the door (something I would definitely like to try on my race car since it already has fixed perspex windows).

The rest of the car is actually pretty good. The windscreen doesn't have to be heavily raked back to acheive good aerodynamics, the Fiat Uno was one of the best for aerodynamics for a long time and it's windscreen was just as upright. The small frontal area is also something of a boon and a curse since it takes quite a large amount of work to make significant gains, on the other hand the bad things aren't really all that bad as a result

Julian, I like your ideas. I've already flushed out the winshield, removing the trim. Also removed the pillar mounted rain gutters, working on the roof gutters.Fixed, hooded headlights,al la Abarth, are already in, covers in process. A splitter is in place, extending about 3" ahead of the factory airdam.I'm seeing about 4x the pressure at the splitter than on the body underside, some indication that I'm getting somewhere.I've also reduced the radiator duct outlet by about 1/2, basicaly by extending the splitter to the rear. What do you think about a full belly pan, maybe raked upwards at the rear, like a F40? Do you think a MR2 roof spoiler would be better than the type used on the Stratos? Also I like the polished plenum, how hard is to keep it shinny? And how hard was to polished it?

In regards to the short shifter, do you have any problems engaging 1st or reverse? I had cut the lever on all my previous cars but only about 2" or 3" max
but I like how the lever look on your car

In responce: 1)Pegasus racing suply.2)Polishing wasn't too hard, just slow, and it helps to have the right tools and a compressor to drive them. To keep it shined, I use a marine grade aluminum polish every few months.By the way, the entire manifold isn't perfectly polished, too many nooks and crannies, just the larger surfaces on the outside, and the interior of the runners.3)1st engages well, but it does want to pop out of reverse.The lever is not as short as it looks, since I mounted the shift "socket" on the inside (bottom surface of top panel) of the tunnel.The shift lever is actualy allmost 5" long.It does look stubby.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The Stratos roof spoiler is positioned to acheive downforce by it's appearance. It wouldn't smooth the airflow which is what the MR2 spoiler is setup for.

On the other hand the Stratos spoiler also wraps around to the side somewhat which could mean that it achieves both in one shot. Only some experimentation would really answer the question.

Creating a venturi tunnel at the rear would certainly help aerodynamics - free downforce at 0 cost. The problem is that to generate the correct airflow you would have to start the tunnel roughly where the gearbox sits. I looked into this sometime ago, did some sketches of what I wanted and then went to measure the car up. The results were a tunnel about 8" long whereas it really needed to be about 3 times that length. You would have to move the entire exhaust up into the rear luggage compartment to get the necessary space as well.

The belly pan is a good idea - if a little difficult to accomplish. The Lotus Esprit uses a rather neat version that is shaped to let the whole thing act as a series of wings. The whole thing looks more like a cheesegrater - you only have to experience the road holding of an Esprit to realize that it HAS to be working and very well at that!

The roof gutters are a real doddle thanks to how easy it is to dismantle the roof. The alternative is to obtain a Dallara roof panel but then you are stuck with a fixed roof instead of the usual removable targa.

I had a good look at the headlamps on a 348 yesterday (a friend of mine has a very nice spider so it wasn't exactly difficult), the leading edge of the headlamps is actually recessed below the level of the bumper (that's what those stupid black raised strips are supposed to be for on the X). The rest appeared to be pretty much standard (in comparison with an X) so I'm guessing that there isn't much to be gained in that respect. On the other hand my Integra had a very neat seal for the bonnet (hood to you guys). The seal ran across the front edge and about 1/3 of the way up the sides making sure that there was no way air could force itself under the hood at speed. (just as well as I'd hate to think of the pressures building up at 140mph). This isn't so important on the X as there is nowhere for the air to go whereas the Integra would have been pumping air through the engine bay and under the rear of the car - completely counteracting the rest of the aerodynamic aids.
