Who's going to Bremerton this weekend??
I'd like to go, but I need to resolve this damn charging system bug my '80 has had recently. It actually started on the Tulip Rallye weekend, but I have only had the chance to drive/look at the car once or twice since then. Today it was sunny so I tackled it...
The symptoms are thus: The car has a new Optima red-top battery in it. That went in just about a week before the Tulip Rallye. I drove it a couple/few times with no issues. Then on the way to/from the Rallye, the car developed a real nasty bug!! When the lights and accessories are off, the charging system is working perfectly...
But if you turn the headlights or other accessories on, the voltmeter takes a nosedive. I have previously rewired this meter direct to the ignition switch 'key-on' hotwire, so I know it is not just an inaccurate reading, at least, not one due to the meter's crappy stock wiring path!
So that's the symptom. Car charges great when acc's are off, turn on the lights & it stops charging (meter drops from 13ish to just about 11 volts) and if you ignore it and continue to drive, the lights will get dimmer, and (I assume) the car would eventually run out of juice & die - although I have not pushed it to that.
Today I found that the alternator belt was a little loose, but not loose enough to explain the problem. It did look tired, though, so I replaced it & put the new belt on properly.
I pulled the voltage regulator & cleaned it up, it looked fine (no broken brushes or leads etc), I replaced the crappy stock battery ground cable with a FAT 2-gauge cable, and then I went for a looong and spirited drive with all acc's turned off...
On the way back, after the battery should have had ample time to charge, I kicked the headlights on & it is still doing it anyway!
I am now open to suggestions!
I would like to get this thing whipped into shape else I might be coming to the autocross in one of the old beater Hondas! We don't want that do we?? -Mac.

It sounds very much like you have an alternator problem. To be sure, you could attach a voltmeter to the output lug on the alternator and read the voltage there directly. (should be 13.2 to 14.4 volts) If the alternator is a Bosch unit(and it should be on that year), the most likely suspect is the regulator. The rest of the alternator is quite reliable. If the charging system is in good shape, it should be able to maintain at least 13.2 volts with all the accessories on. I was hesitant to convict the vreg right off the bat; the car is charging, just not well. I wanted to see if anyone had any prior experiences here that would have cast doubt on a different component (?) but it seems as though you have instead confirmed my niggling-in-the-back-of-my-head suspect.
I had thought it all over, and I know the electrical system in this car is in pretty good shape, and specifically had checked the wiring from battery to starter to alternator, along with some other misc. +12dc wiring.
Just a brief glance around, you know. Didn't turn up anything noticable, except the ground cable on the battery just looked "puny" attached to the Optima, so I chucked it & got a new fattie

Thanks for the tip. By the way, it is the 1500 non-a/c Bosch alternator. This vreg is 1 year old, maybe 2. I used the Bosch part. What is the typical life expectancy of the vreg? It's seemingly young age was another reason I was hesitant to blame it. I somehow thought it would have lasted longer - the brushes look great still.
Do you suppose that throwing that Optima battery in there might have been just enough to send the vreg over the edge?? Just speculatin'... -Mac.

The regulators usually last longer than that, but electronic parts can die early for lots of reasons (hi temps, jump starts, just bad luck).. I have replaced a few alternators, but MANY of the regulators.. the easiest way to test the alternator is to replace the regulator
If the regulator is receiving power from the dash light, and the regulator is new, if the alt STILL has low output, then the problem is the alt itself. Lets hope for the regulator!! let us know, Steve <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Mac, do you have your alternator heat shield in place? Is the alternator cooling hose installed?

The one that the air hose connects to? If so, that is present, and so is the air hose itself, although the hose is really showing its age.

I was lucky enough to have none other than Mark Plaia himself lead me on my very first course walk, offering tips & tricks along the way. I will never forget that act of kindness from the Banana-Slug Racer
The Prelude was a lot more fun on the course than you would expect by looking at it, but then again I put 50/15s and custom (stiff!) lower front springs on it, which I am sure helped a great deal!
Anyway, it was a blast, I got a big kick out of it. As MM so eloquently put it once (he used to 'cross one of these too): "The damn thing corners on its door-handles" - it sure does, but boy it was a hoot. And for a hi-mile '81 Prelude with a total greenhorn novice at the helm, my times were pretty respectable!
Anyhow, I am afraid you are right about one thing Mark S, I am paranoid about the '80 X
I can't wait for the day that my '75 X1/9 is back in action!! You wanna see me get wild on the track? Put me in THAT X baby & I'll go gonzo!!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Actually, it appears that I spoke a little soon - replacing the radiator in the tow vehicle has become replacing the radiator/water pump/transmission cooler/radiator hoses with a little retapping and welding thrown in. Maybe we'll make the afternoon run groups on Sunday or Monday's event instead. So far this month the tow vehicle has required a new driveshaft, a replacement rear housing on the diff and all the seals and gaskets in the rear end of the transmission replaced. I am NOT working on an automatic transmission, I don't care how much it costs to fix.
As for the get-together, don't make it the first part of June 'cause we'll be in Italy the first 2 weeks. Steve has to work while we're there and I have to .. uh .... play hard enough for both of us.

Who's going to Bremerton this weekend??
I'd like to go, but I need to resolve this damn charging system bug my '80 has had recently. It actually started on the Tulip Rallye weekend, but I have only had the chance to drive/look at the car once or twice since then. Today it was sunny so I tackled it...
The symptoms are thus: The car has a new Optima red-top battery in it. That went in just about a week before the Tulip Rallye. I drove it a couple/few times with no issues. Then on the way to/from the Rallye, the car developed a real nasty bug!! When the lights and accessories are off, the charging system is working perfectly...
But if you turn the headlights or other accessories on, the voltmeter takes a nosedive. I have previously rewired this meter direct to the ignition switch 'key-on' hotwire, so I know it is not just an inaccurate reading, at least, not one due to the meter's crappy stock wiring path!
So that's the symptom. Car charges great when acc's are off, turn on the lights & it stops charging (meter drops from 13ish to just about 11 volts) and if you ignore it and continue to drive, the lights will get dimmer, and (I assume) the car would eventually run out of juice & die - although I have not pushed it to that.
Today I found that the alternator belt was a little loose, but not loose enough to explain the problem. It did look tired, though, so I replaced it & put the new belt on properly.
I pulled the voltage regulator & cleaned it up, it looked fine (no broken brushes or leads etc), I replaced the crappy stock battery ground cable with a FAT 2-gauge cable, and then I went for a looong and spirited drive with all acc's turned off...
On the way back, after the battery should have had ample time to charge, I kicked the headlights on & it is still doing it anyway!
I am now open to suggestions!
I would like to get this thing whipped into shape else I might be coming to the autocross in one of the old beater Hondas! We don't want that do we?? -Mac.

It sounds very much like you have an alternator problem. To be sure, you could attach a voltmeter to the output lug on the alternator and read the voltage there directly. (should be 13.2 to 14.4 volts) If the alternator is a Bosch unit(and it should be on that year), the most likely suspect is the regulator. The rest of the alternator is quite reliable. If the charging system is in good shape, it should be able to maintain at least 13.2 volts with all the accessories on. I was hesitant to convict the vreg right off the bat; the car is charging, just not well. I wanted to see if anyone had any prior experiences here that would have cast doubt on a different component (?) but it seems as though you have instead confirmed my niggling-in-the-back-of-my-head suspect.
I had thought it all over, and I know the electrical system in this car is in pretty good shape, and specifically had checked the wiring from battery to starter to alternator, along with some other misc. +12dc wiring.
Just a brief glance around, you know. Didn't turn up anything noticable, except the ground cable on the battery just looked "puny" attached to the Optima, so I chucked it & got a new fattie
Thanks for the tip. By the way, it is the 1500 non-a/c Bosch alternator. This vreg is 1 year old, maybe 2. I used the Bosch part. What is the typical life expectancy of the vreg? It's seemingly young age was another reason I was hesitant to blame it. I somehow thought it would have lasted longer - the brushes look great still.
Do you suppose that throwing that Optima battery in there might have been just enough to send the vreg over the edge?? Just speculatin'... -Mac.

The regulators usually last longer than that, but electronic parts can die early for lots of reasons (hi temps, jump starts, just bad luck).. I have replaced a few alternators, but MANY of the regulators.. the easiest way to test the alternator is to replace the regulator

I was lucky enough to have none other than Mark Plaia himself lead me on my very first course walk, offering tips & tricks along the way. I will never forget that act of kindness from the Banana-Slug Racer
The Prelude was a lot more fun on the course than you would expect by looking at it, but then again I put 50/15s and custom (stiff!) lower front springs on it, which I am sure helped a great deal!
Anyway, it was a blast, I got a big kick out of it. As MM so eloquently put it once (he used to 'cross one of these too): "The damn thing corners on its door-handles" - it sure does, but boy it was a hoot. And for a hi-mile '81 Prelude with a total greenhorn novice at the helm, my times were pretty respectable!
Anyhow, I am afraid you are right about one thing Mark S, I am paranoid about the '80 X
I can't wait for the day that my '75 X1/9 is back in action!! You wanna see me get wild on the track? Put me in THAT X baby & I'll go gonzo!!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Actually, it appears that I spoke a little soon - replacing the radiator in the tow vehicle has become replacing the radiator/water pump/transmission cooler/radiator hoses with a little retapping and welding thrown in. Maybe we'll make the afternoon run groups on Sunday or Monday's event instead. So far this month the tow vehicle has required a new driveshaft, a replacement rear housing on the diff and all the seals and gaskets in the rear end of the transmission replaced. I am NOT working on an automatic transmission, I don't care how much it costs to fix.
As for the get-together, don't make it the first part of June 'cause we'll be in Italy the first 2 weeks. Steve has to work while we're there and I have to .. uh .... play hard enough for both of us.
