I bled it with minimal improvement. It stayed that way until about two weeks ago. I noticed it getting worse when I pulled off a 20 minute cruise on the freeway and couldn't get first gear w/o grinding it.

The slave cylinder showed signs of leaking so I replaced that last night. However, when I tried to bleed the system, I couldn't get any fluid into the system. The reservoir stayed full no matter how much I pumped the pedal, with the slave bleed valve open or closed, etc. Is there a special procedure to bleed it or is it my master that's shot? There's no fluid dripping from the master, but I suppose an inner seal could be bad, preventing any pressure from being built up.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I rigged up a similar system with a reservoir to pressure flush the engine oil galleries after my X sat for 15 years.

I didn't have much luck with the U-suck hand job pump...air would get past the bleeder threads. Teflon tape on the threads is reportedly the cure for that.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Lalo says that when the slave piston is all the way in, the bleeder can get obstructed or something like that. Don't remeber exactly since I never had that probelem.

I plan to try adding the teflon to the bleeder to see if it helps.

What position should the clutch pedal de in while blowing or sucking pressure? Would it help to move the slave piston any?

Are there any tech articles on this one?

I pumped the brake pedal till I was blue in the face and couldn't get any fluid pushed through the slave cylinder bleed screw. I was told that the plunger needs to be somewhat extended in order for the bleeder passage to along flow of the fluid, so I backed the adjusting nuts to take all the pressure off it. That helped a little, but it still wouldn't bleed correctly.

Finally, I took my air compressor, set it to about 10 PSI, wrapped a bunch of rags around my air gun and sealed it over the clutch fluid reservoir opening. I held a steady pressure on it and finally got the thing bleed out successfully. A couple of notes, don't apply too much pressure, or you'll be taking a brake fluid shower. Also, this method bleeds the system very quickly, so be careful not to run out of fluid as you bleed it. It's also essential to have someone watching the clutch cylinder bleed as someone else applies the air pressure.

After wasting the best part of a day to bleed the system in the conventional manner, I decided on a pressure bleed by making up a gadget like a cam follower which was a sliding fit in the reservoir, brazed a small metal tube on top and connected this via a rubber tube to the dust gun on my compressor. This is some years ago but I used no more than 4 - 5lbs pressure. It took one person to apply the pressure and watch the fluid, another to (I think), keep the brake pedal down and a third to do the usual thing at the slave cylinder where the fluid fairly gushed out.

Have someone pump the clutch until a steady stream of fluid squirts out (all over the place!)

Then tighten the fitting, loosen the bleed nipple and bleed until clear. Tighten nipple on a down stroke while squirting.

I had the IDENTICAL problem TWICE and this method cleared the problem (accidentally at first) and proved to be the method of choice the second time. I don't know WHY it works so well... but it does!

I've got one of those mighty (yeah, right) vac pumps with a catch jar that they say works well ... only it doesn't provide much oomph. I hooked up a regular bicycle tire pump to the catch jar and pumped fluid into the bleeder on the slave cylinder ... the old dirty stuff and bubbles goes back to the reservoir in the front trunk. Using a hand held bicycle pump allows you to modulate the pressure and going from the bleeder allows you to really bear down on it pressure-wise if you want to. You do have to keep an eye on the reservior and suck out the old stuff when it gets near full and THAT is where the mighty vac works well. I kept pumping till the stuff filling the reservior was nice and clean and I have a good solid clutch.

I tried bleeding that for a while, then opening the nipple on the slave and bleeding. While I was getting some fluid out, it wasn't building up any pressure, and the reservior level was hardly dropping. My roommate suggested using a syringe to suck the air/fluid out of the slave. Tried that and it still wasn't working very well. Finally, I just took the plunger out of the syringe, held it up next to the coolant bottle, and let my roommate pump the pedal. This seemed to work great. After only a few pumps there was some lovely black fluid filling the syringe. Lots of bubbles, black fluid, nasty white particles, etc, came out. After much bleeding and emptying of the syringe, it finally filled with clear fluid, and a nice firm pedal was achieved - yay!

They're just SO much easier to work on than X1/9s. The clutch slave wouldn't have been a problem - a snapped clutch cable takes 15 minutes to change.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
