I couldn't find one that fit, and neither Vicks or IAP stock them, so I used a pre-heater hose from a small block chevy! It won't last long, as it is one of those paper and aluminum foil jobs, but it works for the moment. Is this even necessary to keep? Or can I just cap those holes off?

Yes, it cools the alternator. The alternator last much longer with this hose in place.

The circuit goes through a temperature switch, which closes when hot, and through the oil pressure light switch, which is closed when the engine is off.
When the engine is running, the cooling effect of the flow and the pressure keeps the gas from vaporizing.
This is why you will hear the fan comming on as soon as you turn the ignition off.
